Why do we give tithes and offerings?

AdventAI

We give tithes and offerings as a sacred acknowledgment of God’s ownership of all things and as a means to support the advancement of His gospel work throughout the world. Giving is not merely a financial transaction but a spiritual act of worship and gratitude for the redemption provided through Jesus Christ.

The Purpose of Tithing

  • Acknowledgment of Ownership: Tithing is a recognition that God is the true proprietor of our time, strength, and property. By returning a tenth, we testify that all we possess is a gift from His hand Leviticus 27:30.

  • Support for the Ministry: The tithe is specifically reserved for the support of the ministry of the gospel, ensuring that those who preach the word have the means to carry on their work Numbers 18:21.

  • A Test of Character: God uses the tithing system to test our loyalty and to see if we will be faithful stewards of the goods He has entrusted to us. It is an opportunity for us to follow His example of benevolence.

The Role of Offerings

  • Expression of Gratitude: While the tithe is a required portion, offerings are voluntary expressions of a heart stirred by the Holy Spirit to show appreciation for God’s mercies.

  • Proportional to Blessings: Our offerings should be in proportion to the light and privileges we enjoy, reflecting our gratitude for the unparalleled sacrifice of the Son of God Luke 12:48.

  • Diverse Purposes: Offerings sustain various facets of God's cause, including relief for the poor, the building of attractive places of worship, and the expansion of missionary enterprises.

Spiritual Benefits of Giving

  • Developing Christlike Character: The act of sacrifice and service for others strengthens the spirit of beneficence in our hearts, allying us more closely with Christ, who became poor so that we might be rich 2 Corinthians 5:21.

  • Overcoming Selfishness: Systematic giving helps refine the soul from the dross of selfishness and covetousness, which are the foundations of sin.

  • Laying Up Treasure in Heaven: By investing our means in the salvation of souls, we are laying up an enduring treasure in heaven and securing a good foundation for the time to come Matthew 10:8.

The Promise of Blessing

God invites us to prove His faithfulness by being honest in our tithes and offerings. He promises to open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing so great that there will not be enough room to receive it, while also rebuking the "devourer" for our sakes Malachi 3:10-11. Keeping this covenant brings spiritual light and prosperity to the church, while withholding what is due to God is regarded as robbery and leads to spiritual darkness Malachi 3:8-9.
