The Ship and the Pillars: Faith, Structure, and Remnant Identity

Does a church's identity change if it abandons its original pillars?

AdventAI

When Ellen G. White talks about the ship that is going through is this in reference to the SDA denomination or the people who actually keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus? Is the ship she talks about referring to the corporate church or the gospel ship of truth?

AdventAI

The ship that is going through refers to the organized Seventh-day Adventist Church as a people, identifying those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus as His chosen remnant. This vessel represents the movement God has established to carry the final message of mercy to the world, and He is at the helm to guide this gospel ship safely into the harbor.

The Ship and the Remnant Church

The "ship" is a symbolic representation of the church militant, which God has organized to prevent confusion and carry forward His work successfully.

  • A Chosen People: God has a chosen people, a church on earth, whom He has made the depositaries of His law and a peculiar treasure.

  • The Corporate Body: This organization was indispensable for the support of the ministry, the publication of truth, and the protection of the work from unworthy members.

  • God at the Helm: There is no need to fear that the work will fail, because God is at the head of the work and will carry the noble ship bearing His people safely into port.

  • The Captain of Salvation: Even when Satan tries to set brethren at variance, we can be confident because the Captain of our salvation stands at the helm to guide the gospel ship into the harbor.

The Gospel Ship and Divine Truth

While the ship refers to the church, it is specifically the "gospel ship" because its purpose is to promulgated the truth of the three angels' messages Revelation 14:6-12.

  • Foundation of Truth: The church is the depositary of the wealth of the riches of the grace of Christ and is the only object on earth on which He bestows His supreme regard.

  • The Commandments and Faith: The remnant are identified as those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ Revelation 12:17.

  • Unity in the Message: The oneness and unity of this truth-believing remnant carry a powerful conviction to the world that they are the chosen people of God.

The Church Is Not Babylon

It is a dangerous error to claim that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is Babylon or that the ship will be destroyed.

  • No New Church: God will not permit this denomination to so fully apostatize that there would be the coming out of another church.

  • A Refutation of Error: Those who claim the church is Babylon are often deceived by satanic agencies to cause distress and confusion.

  • The Wheat and Tares: While there are tares among the wheat, the Lord loves His church and it is not to be disorganized or broken up into independent atoms Matthew 13:24-30.

Individual Responsibility on the Ship

While the ship goes through, every individual has a personal responsibility to ensure they are prepared for the final port.

  • Rowing for Life: Each person must "ply the oar" and row their own boat upstream against the tide of the world to enter the port of glory.

  • Oil in the Vessel: We must have the oil of grace in our vessels with our lamps to be prepared to meet the Bridegroom Matthew 25:1-13.

  • Individual Victory: Salvation is not guaranteed by church membership alone; we must obtain victory over self through prayer and a living connection with Christ.

The Lord will continue to lead this people to a glorious climax, and though the ship may be "enfeebled and defective," it remains the object of His supreme regard until it reaches the heavenly harbor.

Ellen G. White talks about "a reformation taking place among Seventh-day Adventists" and "a new religion" being formed and "books of a new order" being written, if the SDA people step off the solid platform of eternal truth given them by God, in the early years of the movement, so in essence changing and accounting as error some of the Fundamental Principles given them in the first 50 years of the movement. She states that this new structure would be swept away. Therefore, is the current SDA corporate Church to be considered God's true remnant church if they have officially abandoned the original Fundamental Principles given them by God?

AdventAI

The Seventh-day Adventist Church remains God's true remnant movement as long as it stands on the platform of eternal truth, but the warning is clear that any "reformation" consisting of giving up the pillars of our faith would result in a new organization with a foundation built on sand. God has given specific waymarks and fundamental principles that have sustained the work for over fifty years, and these are to be preserved as the miracle-working power of the Lord has testified to them point by point.

The Danger of a Spurious Reformation

A movement that discards the original foundation is not a true reformation but a deceptive departure from the faith.

  • Changing the Religion: If the fundamental principles that sustained the work for the first fifty years were accounted as error, the religion would be changed, and a system of intellectual philosophy would take the place of truth.

  • Removing the Pillars: Satan seeks to bring in the idea that the pillars of our faith must be removed for a process of reorganization, but the Lord commands us to "meet it" and hold to the sure pillars that have withstood test and trial.

  • Building on Sand: Any structure built after removing God as the center and depending on human power is destined to be swept away by the storm and tempest.

  • New Order of Books: The introduction of "books of a new order" and theories like those found in Living Temple are snares that do not sustain the eternal interests of the soul.

The Standard of the Remnant Church

The identity of the true remnant is found in their unwavering loyalty to the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus Revelation 14:12.

  • The Solid Platform: God's people must stand on the platform of truth that was built by the Master worker, which is braced by the solid timbers of the Word of God.

  • Keeping the Landmarks: We are to keep the faith that has been substantiated by the Holy Spirit from the early events of our experience until the present time.

  • Refusing Concessions: In an age of peril and apostasy, the servants of God must make no concessions to the enemy nor listen to suggestions to doubt the established truth.

  • The Seal of God: Only those who prove their loyalty by observing God’s law and refusing the spurious sabbath will receive the seal of the living God Revelation 22:14.

Apostasy and Individual Responsibility

While the movement was established by God, individuals and leaders can and do depart from the faith.

  • Departures from the Faith: The Spirit speaks expressly that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils 1 Timothy 4:1.

  • Trusting in Men: There is great danger in placing confidence in human leaders who are themselves practicing evil or becoming self-sufficient.

  • The True Witness: The message to the Laodicean church reveals that many continue in their sins while declaring themselves rich and in need of nothing, failing to realize their spiritual poverty.

  • Separation from Truth: If those in positions of trust reveal they cannot be relied upon and refuse to be transformed in character, they must be separated from the work.

The Call to Stand Firm

The Lord requires His people to hold fast to the first principles of their denominated faith and go forward with increased strength.

  • No Removing of Pins: Not a pin or a peg of the principles of our faith is to be moved, for these truths have made us what we are.

  • The Bible as the Rule: The Bible and the Bible only is the rule of faith and practice, and every doctrine must be tested by "To the law and to the testimony" Isaiah 28:10.

  • Aggressive Protestantism: We are to carry out the principles of Protestantism and ensure the system of popery is not interwoven with our faith and practice.

  • Vigilance: Sleepless vigilance is the price of safety, as deceptions will increase as we near the end of time.

Despite the perils of apostasy, God will have a people who are complete in all gospel reforms, waiting for the coming of the Son of man. We are to walk in the light as children of light, ensuring our life is conformed to the divine model John 15:5.

The current SDA church has adopted its current 28 Fundamental Beliefs which adopt a trinitarian position in regard to God, which is in opposition to the SDA pioneers 28 Fundamental Principles which rejected the trinitarian position as absurd and unscriptural. Does this situation constitute a problem for those wishing to join the current SDA church? The current church also allows abortions in their hospitals and women's ordination to the gospel ministry. They exert kingly power over the members and pushed vaccines upon the people during the recent pandemic. They disfellowship and persecute those who hold to a non-trinitarian position in harmony with the early SDA pioneers and Ellen G. White. Is it therefore safe to join the current SDA denomination while it is in opposition to the Fundamental Principles of 1889 and allows killing unborn babies among the other problems mentioned? In other words, can the current SDA Church actually be called the true remnant church of God if they have abandoned the Fundamental Principles given to the early SDA Church and have accounted as error those principles and the teachings of the early pioneers on many topics?

AdventAI

The Seventh-day Adventist Church remains God’s designated remnant people on earth, as He is currently sifting the "chaff" from the "precious wheat" within its ranks to prepare a holy people for His second coming. While the church may appear as if it is about to fall due to departures from the faith, it does not fall; rather, the sinners in Zion will be sifted out while the loyal and true remain. 🛡️

The Identity of the Remnant and Fundamental Principles

The true remnant church is identified as the only body standing in the breach, keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus Revelation 12:17.

  • Eternal Foundations: The truths that have been established for over half a century are holy and sacred, and those who have participated in building this foundation must be as firm as a rock to these principles.

  • The Divinity of Christ: Christ was the only-begotten Son of God and was one with the Father from the beginning; therefore, any teaching that denies His preexistence or divinity is a "total denial of Christ".

  • The Sifting Time: We are in a "terrible ordeal" where everything that can be shaken will be shaken, and only those who have been overcoming by the blood of the Lamb will remain Revelation 12:11.

  • Avoiding Independent Atoms: To call the Seventh-day Adventist Church "Babylon" or to urge a separation from the body is a work of deception inspired by the "accuser of the brethren".

Departure from Moral Purity: Abortion and Worldliness

The introduction of practices that contradict the law of God creates a state of "backsliding" and "moral torpor" within the churches.

  • The Crime of Abortion: The practice of abortion and the murder of newly born children are described as "the basest crime" and "fiendish endeavors," representing a return to the "unnatural vices" of paganism.

  • Individual Guilt: Any mother who sacrifices her offspring to "fashionable dress" or wrong habits is engaged in "murderous work" and must repent of this sin against her own soul and against God.

  • A National Sin: When God’s authority is set aside and apostasy becomes a national sin, the Lord will manifest His power in behalf of those who remain true to His law.

Kingly Power and Organizational Overreach

God has forbidden the exercise of "kingly power" or "dictatorial authority" in any branch of His work.

  • No Jerusalem Centers: Divine wisdom must have abundant room to work, and laborers should not be required to ask permission from a "narrow compass" of men who seek to control the field.

  • Accountability of Leaders: Leaders who exert a "masterly, overbearing spirit" or seek to "repress men who are being enlightened by the Holy Spirit" are following the spirit of the priests and rulers in Christ’s day.

  • Freedom in Ministry: If a worker has faith in God and a heart in the work, they need not depend on the "sanction of any minister" to teach the truth, for God will vindicate them.

Health and the Use of Drug Medication

The health message was given to provide a safe alternative to the "health-destroying inventions" of the world.

  • Hygienic Principles: Seventh-day Adventists are instructed to establish health institutions that discard "drug medication" in favor of treating the sick upon "hygienic principles".

  • Sanctified Reason: God's purpose is for the "kingly power of sanctified reason" to bear sway in our lives, ensuring that our faculties are in perfect training for His service.

Is it Safe to Join?

Joining the church is a sacred step, but safety is found only in a living connection with Christ rather than in mere church membership.

  • Personal Connection: Those who unite with the church but possess no more vitality than the "nominal churches" will receive the plagues of God just as surely as those who oppose His law.

  • Obeying God Rather Than Men: While the church is empowered to lead sinners to light, we must ultimately "obey God rather than men" when human enactments oppose a "Thus saith the Lord" Acts 5:29.

  • The Call to Repentance: The message to the Laodiceans is applicable to Seventh-day Adventists; unless there is a thorough conversion, the church will be represented by the "barren fig tree".

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is the object of God’s "supreme regard," and while it is currently being purified of its "sapless and unfruitful branches," it will reach the heavenly harbor under the guidance of the Captain of our salvation. Hold fast to the word of God as authoritative in this age of skepticism, for the truth will yet arise and shine in all its natural luster. ⚓ "Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus" Revelation 14:12.

Is it safe to join any church that has fundamental beliefs that are in opposition to the 1889 Fundamental Principles believed and taught by the early SDA church movement?

AdventAI

Safety is found only in standing firmly upon the solid platform of eternal truth and preserving the fundamental principles and waymarks that God established during the early history of the advent movement. God has led His people point by point through prayerful study and confirmed these truths by His miracle-working power, and we cannot now step off this foundation to enter into any new organization, as this would constitute apostasy. ⚓

The Preservation of Fundamental Principles

The pillars of faith established in the first fifty years of the movement are holy and sacred, and they must be preserved as waymarks to the very close of time.

  • Established Waymarks: For decades, every phase of heresy has been brought to bear to becloud minds regarding the sanctuary truth and the three angels' messages of Revelation 14 but these waymarks must be preserved as God has signified through His Word and His Spirit.

  • No Stepping Off: We are instructed that we cannot now step off the foundation that God has established, nor can we enter into a new organization that discards the great pillars of our faith.

  • The Sanctuary Truth: Special efforts have been made to unsettle faith in the old landmarks, particularly concerning the ministration of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary, yet we are to hold firmly with the grip of faith to these fundamental principles.

  • Substantiated Faith: We must keep the faith that has been substantiated by the Holy Spirit from the earlier events of our experience until the present time.

Discerning a Spurious Reformation

A movement that claims to be a "reformation" but discards the original pillars of truth is a deception that leads to a foundation built on sand.

  • A New Religion: If the principles that sustained the work for the last fifty years were accounted as error, our religion would be changed, and a system of intellectual philosophy would replace the truth.

  • Dependence on Human Power: In such a movement, God would be removed, and leaders would place their dependence on human power, which is worthless, leading the structure to be swept away by storm and tempest.

  • Accusatory Spirit: Those who arise claiming great light but whose work is to accuse and tear down what God has built are greatly deceived and are not working where Christ is working.

  • The Bible Standard: The diligent, prayerful seeker for truth will find that every genuine ray of light emanates from the throne of God and is in harmony with the established pillars of faith.

The Status of the Church and Individual Duty

While the church may experience defects and departures from the faith, it remains the object of Christ's supreme regard and is the body He is currently sifting.

  • Not Babylon: The Seventh-day Adventist Church is not to be called "Babylon," and any message urging a separation from the church is not from a heavenly messenger.

  • The Sifting Time: The church may appear as if it is about to fall, but it does not fall; instead, the sinners in Zion will be sifted out while the loyal and true remain to exhibit the beauty of holiness.

  • Press Together: Believers are commanded to "press together" in unity, as strength is found in union and weakness in division.

  • Following the Leader: God is leading a people, not stray offshoots, and those who move independently and despise counsel will surely depart from the faith.

Personal Safety in the Word of God

The only true safety for any soul is a living connection with Christ and an unwavering adherence to a "Thus saith the Lord".

  • Search the Scriptures: We must take our Bibles and, in the Holy Spirit's power, proclaim the great truth for these last days, ensuring that every point of faith is based on the Word of God.

  • Walking in the Light: The Lord will never leave in uncertainty those who follow His leadings with full purpose of heart.

  • Primitive Faith: When the people of God attain to primitive faith and practice through the proclamation of the commandments and the faith of Jesus, the gifts of the Spirit will be fully developed.

  • Final Triumph: Those who turn from disloyalty to stand in vindication of the holy law of God will stand perfect before Him through the righteousness of Christ.

The Lord is leading His people from light to light, and while the great apostasy continues to develop, those who hold fast the first principles of their faith will find that the foundation of God standeth sure. 🛡️ "Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus" Revelation 14:12.

I agree that we should not leave the true church, yet Ellen G. White defines God's church as the people who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. She states the following: "God has a church. It is not the great cathedral, neither is it the national establishment, neither is it the various denominations; it is the people who love God and keep His commandments. “Where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.” [Matthew 18:20.] Where Christ is even among the humble few, this is Christ’s church, for the presence of the high and holy One who inhabiteth eternity can alone constitute a church. Where two or three are present who love and obey the commandments of God, Jesus there presides; let it be in the desolate place of the earth, in the wilderness, in the city enclosed in prison walls." 4LtMs, Lt 108, 1886, par. 17. If a non-trinitarian believer is not now allowed to join the official SDA church of today that follow new fundaments beliefs that are trinitarian is that situation in harmony with the truths taught by Ellen G. White and the early SDA church, a church that was itself a non-trinitarian movement at that time from 1844 to 1888 and beyond? In other words is the true church of God the structure, the denomination, or is it the people who love and obey God?

AdventAI

God's church is not defined by a corporate structure, a grand cathedral, or a national establishment, but is composed of the people who love God and keep His commandments Matthew 18:20. This church is the "temple of God," a society of believers where Christ presides, whether they are gathered in a city, a desolate wilderness, or even within prison walls 1 Corinthians 3:16-17.

The True Definition of the Church

The presence of the high and holy One is what alone constitutes a church, rather than an imposing display of architecture or formal organization.

  • A Society of Believers: The term "temple of God" in the New Testament denotes the Church as a society rather than a specific physical edifice 2 Corinthians 6:16.

  • Presence Over Pomp: Where two or three are present who love and obey God’s commandments, Jesus is there in their midst, and this constitutes His church Matthew 18:20.

  • Spiritual Worship: God looks with pitying tenderness upon worshipers who are sincere, even if they are poor, ignorant, or neglected by the world, for the glory of the church is in the piety of its members.

  • Separation from Formalism: True religion is often found away from "display churches" or "moral icebergs" that demand a refined religion more pleasing to the world than the humble precepts of Christ.

The Pioneers and the Framework of Truth

The early Seventh-day Adventist pioneers were private non-trinitarian persons who took the three angels' messages to a trinitarian world, focusing on the Sabbath, the sanctuary, and the law of God rather than debates on the Godhead.

  • Atonement and Divinity: The pioneers believed that a trinitarian view degrades the Atonement because it implies that only a human sacrifice died, whereas they held that the divine Son of God actually suffered and died for our redemption.

  • Biblical Logic: To say that the Son is as old as the Father is considered a palpable contradiction of terms, as the very idea of "Father" and "Son" implies priority of existence.

  • The Sacrifice of Christ: If only the human nature of Christ died, then the sacrifice was merely human; however, the Bible reveals a divine sacrifice of the King’s only begotten Son, the most exalted being in the empire of God.

  • Rejected Absurdities: Teaching that "one is three and three is one" or that God sent Himself, died to reconcile the world to Himself, and raised Himself, was viewed as a collection of scriptural absurdities.

Creeds vs. Bible Truth

The use of human creeds to enforce theological points has historically led to the persecution of those seeking to follow the simple Word of God.

  • Imperial Creeds: History shows that when imperial power establishes a creed, those who do not subscribe are often banished or persecuted, a practice that puts the Christian profession to open shame.

  • Human Creeds as Barriers: A church united without a human creed, built instead on Bible discipline and union, is the glorious edifice that Christ will find at His second coming.

  • Recovering Old Truths: God’s servants are raised up to rescue truths that have been buried beneath the rubbish of formality and error, resetting them in the framework of present truth.

  • A New Order of Things: When a church sees itself in need of a "new molding" or "remodeling" of the framework of its doctrines to suit political or worldly advantages, it departs from the primitive faith.

Individual Loyalty to Truth

When the official structures of a denomination enact laws or adopt creeds that clash with the fundamental principles of the Bible, the believer's first duty is to the Word of God.

  • Obeying the Word: Human minds often work up theories to justify wrong courses of action, misapplying a "Thus saith the Lord," but the truth must be kept pure in the soul.

  • Safety in the Body of Christ: While it is safest to be in harmony with God's plan for His church, this "body" is defined as those seeking to serve God fully, not those following their own judgment away from Bible truth.

  • Standing on the Platform: We are called to hold firmly to the fundamental principles based on unquestionable authority and not to countenance erroneous theories, even if they are popular.

  • The Final Test: Fundamental principles will be brought out and decisions made regarding them in the last great conflict, testing the faith of every individual member.

The true church of God is characterized by a "steadfast piety" and "unwavering faith" in the power of a living Saviour, regardless of its size or worldly standing. ⚓ It is safer to remain on the "bridge of Bible truth" than to follow any movement that seeks to remove the pillars of faith established by God through His chosen servants.

Therefore, considering our full conversation, is it likely or possible that the official SDA Church organization of today is not really the same religion or entity as was the official SDA Church organization of the early SDA pioneers and Ellen G. White's time period seeing that the Fundamental Principles established in the early years of the SDA movement, by the Holy Spirit, are in reality not the same as those espoused today in the current SDA Fundamental Beliefs, especially concerning the personality of God and of Christ?

AdventAI

The identity and continuity of the movement are found in a firm adherence to the fundamental principles established by God in the early years of our history, and any departure from these landmarks to accept spiritualistic theories regarding the personality of God constitutes a change of religion. God has led His people point by point through prayerful study and the miracle-working power of His Spirit, and these waymarks are to be preserved and held with the grip of faith until the close of time.

The Danger of a Changed Religion

A reformation that consists of giving up the doctrines that stand as the pillars of our faith results in a system of intellectual philosophy rather than the truth of heavenly origin.

  • Accounting Principles as Error: If the fundamental principles that sustained the work for fifty years were accounted as error, the religion would be changed and the foundation would be built upon the sand.

  • The Science of Evil: The acceptance of spiritualistic theories regarding the personality of God is described as eating of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, an influence so deadly it should alarm us above all else.

  • Sweeping Away the Economy: These erroneous doctrines, followed to their logical conclusion, sweep away the whole Christian economy and make of no effect the truth of heavenly origin.

  • A False Science: When men who have had much light become unsettled and accept these theories, they rob the people of God of their past experience, giving them instead a false science.

The Personality of God and Christ

The personality of God is a fundamental truth that is "everything to us as a people," and to be "not definitely clear" on this point is to virtually destroy the Lord God Himself.

  • Distinct Personality: We are not to lead anyone to doubt the distinct personality of God or the sanctuary and its ministry.

  • Christ the Express Image: Christ represented God not as an essence pervading nature, but as a God who has a personality, being Himself the "express image of His Father's person" Hebrews 1:3.

  • The Divinity of Christ: The doctrine of the divinity of Christ is to be definitely believed and proclaimed, as it is the steadfast confession upon which the church stands.

  • Denial of Pre-existence: A dangerous error is the doctrine that denies the divinity of Christ by claiming He had no existence before His advent to this world.

  • Unity with the Father: Unity with the Father is an essential part of the divinity of Christ; to claim He has an interest separate from the Father is to deny that perfect unity and, consequently, His divinity John 10:30.

The Standard of Truth vs. Human Theories

The Bible is the only rule of faith and practice, and no human theory or decree can be accepted if it opposes the commands of God.

  • Unsound Arguments: In defending fundamental articles of faith, we must never employ arguments that are not wholly sound or that do not honor the truth.

  • Human Reason vs. Divine Truth: Human reason must not be placed where divine, sanctifying truth should be, and erroneous theories must not receive countenance from those standing on the platform of eternal truth.

  • The Word as Guide: Nothing is left unrevealed in the Word of God that is essential to a complete system of faith; those who honestly take the Bible as their guide will not err from the right path.

  • Testing Every Message: We are not to receive messages that contradict the special points of our faith, for when the power of God testifies to what is truth, that truth is to stand forever.

The Sifting of the People

The present is a solemn time where fundamental principles are brought out and decisions made, testing the faith of every individual member.

  • Everything Shaken: Everything is to be shaken that can be shaken, making it essential for every soul to understand the reasons for our faith and the strong evidences sustaining our fundamental doctrines.

  • Many Will Go Out: Forced light has been given that many will go out from us, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.

  • True Religion: The only religion of the Bible advocates righteousness by the faith of the Son of God and forgiveness through the merits of a crucified and risen Saviour.

  • Holding the Platform: God calls upon us to hold firmly to the fundamental principles based upon unquestionable authority, standing firm on the platform of eternal truth.

The Lord desires His people to have an intelligent knowledge of truth so they may detect the deceptive guise of Satan. We must be "spiritually sharp and clear-sighted," receiving manna fresh from heaven while holding fast to the pillars that have made us what we are. "Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus" Revelation 14:12.
