The Ten Commandments Written by the Finger of God

It is a beautiful truth that the Ten Commandments occupy a unique place in history because they were personally engraved by the finger of God on tables of stone. ✍️ This act highlights their eternal nature and the supreme importance God places on His moral law.

The Original Tables at Mount Sinai

When God first delivered His law to His people, He did not entrust the writing to any human agent. Instead, after speaking the commandments with an audible voice from the midst of the fire, He personally inscribed them.

• ** Exodus 31:18** – "And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God."

• ** Deuteronomy 9:10** – "And the Lord delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the Lord spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly."

• ** Exodus 32:16** – "And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables."

The Second Set of Tables

Even after the first tables were broken by Moses due to the people’s idolatry, God reaffirmed the immutability of His law by writing the exact same words a second time with His own finger. 🛡️

• ** Exodus 34:1** – "And the Lord said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest."

• ** Deuteronomy 10:2, 4** – "And I will write on the tables the words that were in the first tables which thou brakest... And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the Lord spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire."

The Law in the Heavenly Sanctuary

The Ten Commandments are not merely a terrestrial record; they are preserved in the very presence of God in heaven. The earthly ark was a pattern of the heavenly ark of His testament. 🏛️

• ** Revelation 11:19** – "And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail."

• ** Exodus 25:21** – "And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee."

Writing the Law on the Heart

The same "finger of God" (which is the Spirit of God) that wrote the law on stone now seeks to write those same holy precepts within our hearts. This is the essence of the New Covenant—bringing us into perfect harmony with His character. ❤️

• ** 2 Corinthians 3:3** – "Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart."

• ** Hebrews 8:10** – "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people."

• ** Luke 11:20** – "But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you." (Comparing this with Matthew 12:28 shows the finger of God is the Spirit of God).

God's law is as enduring as His own throne because it was written by His own hand Psalm 119:172+1. By keeping His commandments, we show our love for the One who wrote them for our good John 14:15+1.
