The Three Elijahs: From Prophecy to Final Reformation
Who are the three Elijahs and what is their mission for our time?
How many Elijahs are there?
AdventAI
There are three distinct manifestations of Elijah identified in the unfolding of God’s purpose: the literal prophet Elijah the Tishbite, John the Baptist who came in his spirit and power, and a final message of reform that prepares the world for the second advent of Christ.
The Historical Prophet Elijah
The first Elijah was the Tishbite from Gilead who appeared suddenly during a time of great spiritual decline in Israel. He was a man with human passions like our own, yet he possessed unwavering faith and prayed earnestly for the heavens to be shut, resulting in a famine that lasted three years and six months 1 Kings 17:1. Throughout his ministry, he fearlessly denounced the crimes of the people and stood as the sole witness for the true God on Mount Carmel. After finishing his work, he did not experience death but was translated to heaven in a chariot of fire 2 Kings 2:11.
John the Baptist: The Second Elijah
John the Baptist fulfilled the prophecy of a messenger sent before the first advent of the Savior. He appeared in a manner strikingly similar to his predecessor, coming from the wilderness with an ascetic appearance and a pointed message of repentance. Jesus confirmed that John was the "Elias" who was to come, ministering in the same spirit and power to reprove prevailing sins and prepare the way for the Messiah.
The Elijah Message for the Final Days
The Scriptures point to a third application of the Elijah mission just preceding the great and dreadful day of the Lord Malachi 4:5.
A Message of Reform: Just as Elijah and John called people back to God's commandments, a final "everlasting Gospel" is proclaimed to every nation, calling them to fear God and worship the Creator.
Facing Opposition: Those who bear this final warning will encounter the same hatred and accusations of being "troublers" that Elijah faced from King Ahab 1 Kings 18:17-18.
A People Prepared: This work aims to prepare a people to stand during the final crisis and be ready for translation at Christ's appearing, symbolized by Elijah's own ascent into glory.
Summary of the Three Elijahs
| Manifestation | Period | Key Work |
|---|---|---|
| Elijah the Tishbite | Old Testament | Restoring the worship of Jehovah against Baalism. |
| John the Baptist | First Advent | Preparing the way for Christ's first coming. |
| The Final Message | Second Advent | Proclaiming the commandments and the faith of Jesus. |
Even beyond these specific roles, Elijah’s life serves as a constant encouragement; he appeared with Moses on the Mount of Transfiguration to sympathize with and minister to Jesus during His earthly trials Matthew 17:1-5.

What should God's people be doing now (2026) in the spirit of Elijah?
AdventAI
God’s people today are called to agitate the great subject of reform, preparing the way for Christ’s second appearing by presenting sacred truths and practicing temperance in all things. This work involves a deep, personal connection with the Holy Spirit and a total commitment to heart-searching repentance.
Proclaim the Elijah Message
We must sound a clear alarm, urging everyone to prepare to meet their God with the same earnestness that characterized Elijah and John the Baptist.
Restore God's Law: Just as John the Baptist turned attention to the Ten Commandments, we are to proclaim the law of God and the third angel's message with no uncertain sound Malachi 4:5-6.
Warn of Impending Judgment: The message must be direct and pointed, announcing that the hour of God's judgment has come Revelation 14:7.
Call for Separation: God’s messengers are to call people out of apostasy and worldly systems, ensuring their own lives are so connected to Heaven that the Spirit of God carries conviction to the listeners.
Embrace Comprehensive Reform
The work of preparation for the coming of the Son of man is deeply linked to health and temperance.
Health Reform: Health reform is a great branch of the preparation work, acting as the "right hand" to the body of the third angel's message.
Simplicity and Self-Denial: We are to live in contrast to the extravagant, health-destroying habits of this degenerate age, turning away from gluttony, idolatry, and extravagance in dress.
Practical Medical Missionary Work: There is a great need to establish small sanitariums and for laborers to go forth with our health publications, teaching others the laws of life and providing healing for both body and soul.
Seek Spiritual Power and Education
Individual preparation is essential to avoid being deceived by the errors and delusions Satan is bringing in these times.
Consecration through Prayer: Ministers and laypeople alike should spend time in earnest prayer, prostrating themselves before the throne of grace until the Holy Spirit responds with power.
Study the Past: Every Seventh-day Adventist should be studying the experiences of the past, especially the first, second, and third angels' messages, which are the immovable pillars of our faith.
Focus on True Education: We must weed out all unessential matters from our courses of study and prioritize that which strengthens the spiritual life and prepares the youth for service in other countries.
Wait with Alertness and Faith
While the exact day and hour of Christ's return are not revealed to any man, we must live in constant readiness, watching the signs that show He is at the door Matthew 24:36-44. We are to manifest the unyielding persistence of Elijah in our petitions to God, relying wholly on His Spirit rather than our own human talking or sermonizing Zechariah 4:6. By fastening ourselves to Christ and striving for perfection of character, we will be prepared to stand when the voice of God finally declares the day and hour of Jesus' coming.
