True Sanctification: A Lifelong Journey of Holiness
What is true sanctification and how does it transform a life?
What is true sanctification?
AdventAI
True sanctification is the process of being made holy and becoming entirely conformed to the will of God through obedience to His truth, empowered by the Holy Spirit. It is a profound, life-long transformation, encompassing the entire being—spirit, soul, and body—and is a prerequisite for seeing God and inheriting eternal life 1 Thessalonians 5:23Hebrews 12:14.
The Nature of True Sanctification
True sanctification is fundamentally a living, active principle that permeates every aspect of daily life, rather than a mere theory, fleeting emotion, or collection of words. It is not an instantaneous event but a continuous, daily work that persists throughout one's life. This process involves a constant progression, likened to climbing a ladder step by step, striving for continuous growth in grace and knowledge.
At its core, true sanctification is the manifestation of perfect love: loving God with all one's heart, soul, and mind, and loving one's neighbor as oneself. This love is expressed through entire conformity to God's will and blameless obedience to His commandments. It brings all human passions and desires under the control of the Spirit of God, indicating a wholeness in service to Him. The definition of sanctification can be summarized as "This do, and thou shalt live," emphasizing active obedience to God's requirements Luke 10:28.
Attaining True Sanctification
The path to true sanctification is multifaceted, involving the divine work of God and the active cooperation of the individual. It is achieved primarily "through Thy truth: Thy word is truth" John 17:17. The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in this process, guiding believers "into all truth" John 16:13. Through the Spirit's operation, Christ's nature is implanted in humanity, leading to a transformation of character into His image.
Faith in Jesus Christ is indispensable, enabling believers to steadfastly behold Him and be changed into His likeness 2 Corinthians 3:18. This faith is active, working by love and purifying the soul. Individual consecration, involving the full surrender of the entire being—mind, soul, heart, and strength—to Christ, is essential for genuine sanctification.
Furthermore, true sanctification demands self-denial and self-control. Individuals are exhorted to "cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God" 2 Corinthians 7:1. This includes temperance in all things, cutting away self-indulgence, and obtaining mastery over wrong habits and practices. Presenting one's body as a "living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God" Romans 12:1 is a practical expression of this commitment.
The proper observance of the Sabbath is highlighted as a distinct and decisive teaching concerning true sanctification, serving as a sign between God and His people, allowing them to know that He is the Lord who sanctifies them Exodus 31:13. He who from the heart obeys the fourth commandment demonstrates obedience to the whole law.
The Fruits and Evidences
True sanctification bears specific fruits that reveal its authenticity. It is evidenced by a conscientious regard for all God's commandments, careful improvement of every talent, circumspect conversation, and a consistent revelation of the meekness of Christ in every action. Love for God and for one another is a primary fruit, binding followers in bonds of perfect union.
A sanctified character is transformed, reflecting the image of Christ in righteousness and true holiness, and leading to good works. Such individuals are calm, sensible, humble, gentle, kind, forbearing, and full of love. They exhibit personal piety, sound principles in all transactions, and let their light shine through good works. They do not make boastful claims of holiness, but rather recognize their unworthiness in contrast to the Infinite One, continually hungering and thirsting for righteousness and seeing sin as exceedingly sinful.
Distinguishing True from Spurious Sanctification
It is crucial to differentiate between true and spurious sanctification. Spurious sanctification often manifests as strong emotional feelings, boastful self-righteousness, and a disregard for God's law. This "modern holiness" or "Methodist sanctification" can be a deception and a snare, causing individuals to be satisfied with themselves while actively trampling on God's commandments. Such claims of holiness are often belied by daily lives that are in direct contrast to their profession, revealing insubordination, pride, envy, jealousy, and evil surmising. Genuine sanctification, by contrast, is demonstrated by a life wholly devoted to carrying out God's requirements.
Conclusion
In essence, true sanctification is a profound, lifelong, and transformative work of divine grace, initiated by the Holy Spirit through God's truth, and sustained by an individual's willing and continuous obedience. It results in a character that perfectly reflects the image of Christ, marked by humility, love, and righteousness, making one fit for heaven and for the eternal service of God. Without this genuine sanctification, and particularly without obedience to God's commandments, any claim to holiness is a deception, proving to be "spurious sanctification".
