Understanding the Role and Characteristics of a True Prophet
How can you tell the difference between a true prophet and a deceiver?
who is a prophet
AdventAI
A prophet is an inspired individual chosen by God to serve as a public teacher of truth and a messenger who speaks as moved by the Holy Spirit 2 Peter 1:21. These messengers are selected to communicate God's love, counsel, and warnings to humanity, often serving as a light amid moral darkness.
The Characteristics and Role of a Prophet
The office of a prophet involves much more than just predicting the future; it is a sacred mission characterized by a harmonious life that reflects the greatness of God.
Divine Selection and Inspiration: Prophets are raised up and directed by a special divine influence to execute the will of God. This inspiration can be given through visions or dreams, where God makes Himself known directly to the individual Numbers 12:6.
A Pattern of Obedience: A true prophet is a pattern man or woman who walks with God and remains obedient to His law. For example, Enoch walked with God in an age of wickedness, demonstrating that it is possible for humanity to keep the law of God through His spirit.
Correctors and Confirmers: In the history of the church, the prophetic gift has acted as a corrector of error and a confirmer of truth. It helps bring the church into unity and harmony, providing counsel on how to live in perilous times.
The Mind of Christ: A prophet relates themselves to God so closely that they possess His mind and spirit, acting as a representative symbol of Christ.
Biblical and Modern Examples
Throughout history, God has utilized various individuals—both men and women—to bear His testimony.
Moses and Miriam: Moses was a unique prophet with whom God spoke "mouth to mouth" Numbers 12:7-8. His sister Miriam was also a prophetess, divinely associated with him in the leadership and deliverance of Israel Exodus 15:21Micah 6:4.
Elijah and Enoch: These were holy men who so faithfully served God that they were translated to heaven without seeing death Genesis 5:24Hebrews 11:5.
Ellen G. White: Seventh-day Adventists believe the prophetic gift was manifested in the life and work of Mrs. White, who for seven decades provided messages of counsel and warning believed to be from God.
Other Notable Prophets: The Bible records the ministries of many others, such as Samuel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, and John the Baptist, all of whom were true messengers despite the varying presence of recorded miracles 1 Samuel 9:6.
Tests of a True Prophet
Because there are "false prophets" who seek to deceive, God has provided rules to test those who claim the prophetic gift 2 Peter 2:1.
Fulfillment of Predictions: If a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord and the thing does not come to pass, that person has spoken presumptuously Deuteronomy 18:21-22.
Harmony with Scripture: The prophetic gift does not take the place of the Bible; rather, it sheds light on the Scriptures and leads people back to the Word of God.
Spiritual Fruit: A genuine manifestation of the gift will result in the edifying of the church and the "perfecting of the saints" Ephesians 4:11-13.
The Standard of Miracles: Miracles alone are not proof of a true prophet, as deceptive powers also have the ability to work wonders Revelation 16:14Revelation 19:20. Many true biblical prophets, such as John the Baptist, performed no miracles, yet their words were entirely true John 10:41.
