What is the Gospel? The Plan of Redemption Explained
Is the gospel more than just forgiveness for your sins?
What is the gospel
AdventAI
The gospel is the power of God for the salvation of every person who believes, providing the only effective means to suppress sin by enabling the individual to keep the divine law Romans 1:16. It is the perfect embodiment of Christ himself, who brought life and immortality to light through His mission on earth 2 Timothy 1:10.
The Essence of the Gospel Plan
The gospel plan is a divine system of redemption designed to restore the moral image of God in man through the abiding presence of Christ. This plan involves several key elements:
Transformation of Character: True religion via the gospel means more than just the forgiveness of sin; it involves taking away sins and filling the heart with the Holy Spirit to produce a life of purity and perfect peace.
Internal Harmony with the Law: The gospel is not the abolition of the law but its perfection and explanation. The law is the gospel veiled, while the gospel is the law defined in its far-reaching principles.
Practical Godliness: Salvation comes through a faith that is made perfect through works and evidenced in a transformed character. This includes following the example of Christ in useful manual labor and ministering to the necessities of others.
Receiving and Imparting: A fundamental principle of the gospel is that those who receive the light must impart it to others, as the work of God is carried forward by those who are workers together with Him.
The Foundations of Redemption
The gospel is built upon the historical and spiritual reality of Jesus Christ's sacrifice and victory.
Christ's Substitution: Jesus stood between the wrath of the Father and guilty man, bearing the weight of the sins of the whole world.
Abolition of Death: Through His death and resurrection, Christ abolished death and provided the only way for humans to receive eternal life 2 Timothy 1:10.
The Atonement: We are currently in the anti-typical day of atonement, a time to humble ourselves and accept the justifying grace of Christ and the sanctifying operations of the Holy Spirit.
The Gospel in Practice
Living the gospel involves a complete commitment of the heart and life to God's service.
Forsaking All: To be a disciple, one must be willing to forsake all that they have and follow the Master Luke 14:33.
Medical Missionary Work: This is a vital part of the gospel plan, as ministering to physical suffering touches hearts and opens doors to speak of the love of Jesus.
Unity in the Church: The gospel plan includes uniting all believers into organized bodies to help one another and reveal the character of Christ to the world.
Self-Denial: Acceptable service to God is a free, heart service that prioritizes God's cause over self-interest and personal pleasure.
Ultimately, the gospel is the "good news" that although we were debtors to divine justice with nothing to pay, the Son of God paid the price of our redemption so that we might be rich through His poverty. It is the invitation to a heavenly feast where Christ is the bread of life, and those who eat of Him shall live forever John 6:51, 54.
