The Messiah

“MESSIAH” is a Hebrew word meaning “the anointed.” “Christ” is the Greek word meaning the same thing. John 1:29. Jesus the Son of God was especially the anointed of God. When he began his earthly work, he was anointed by the Holy Spirit to preach the glad tidings to the poor, to heal the sick, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. Luke 4:18. According to the type he was anointed when he ascended to Heaven and entered on his work as priest. He is the great High Priest of God. He will be anointed once more when he comes to take his own, and sits down upon the throne of his father David.
He is anointed of God; men are anointed through him. His anointing was by the Holy Spirit, and was effectual in fitting him for his work, in which was needed all power and all gifts. The anointing which we will receive will be effectual in us if we will but lay hold on God by faith. He who is anointed of God to save us, will fail not nor be discouraged.
