Obituaries

Evans.—Margaret O. Sliter was born in eastern New York in the year 1836, and died at Naches, Wash., Sept. 28, 1912. She was baptized and united with the Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1885. Two years later she was united in marriage with Stewart W. Evans. Two children were born to them. The funeral service was conducted by Elder S. H. Kime. Text, Job 14:15. Ruth Evans.

Nelson.—Mrs. H. F. Nelson was born in Denmark, Oct. 25, 1834. She came to America about twenty-seven years ago, and four years later accepted present truth, uniting with the Brookville Seventh-day Adventist Church, near Morgan, Minn. She was an earnest Christian, and loved the work of God. Many a dollar, gained by strict self-denial and hard work, found its way to the mission fields through her liberal offerings. She was a great sufferer for about five months, and fell asleep in Jesus Aug. 28, 1912. The funeral service was conducted by Elder A. W. Kuehl, assisted by the pastor of the Morgan Presbyterian Church. Mrs. H. P. Mortenson.

Holt.—Mrs. Elizabeth J. Holt, a most faithful and consistent believer in the third angel's message, fell asleep in Jesus Oct. 7, 1912, at Caldwell, Idaho. She leaves one son, one daughter, one brother, and two sisters to mourn, besides a large circle of friends who had learned to love her. She accepted present truth about fifteen years ago. The funeral services were conducted by the writer. A. C. Bird.

Davis.—Carrie Minns was born in Ohio, in the year 1837, and died Oct. 4, 1912, aged 75 years, 3 months, and 3 days. She was married to William B. Davis, whose death occurred fifteen years ago. For almost fifty years the deceased was a believer in this message, and rejoiced in the hope of the soon coming of her Lord. Two sons and one daughter are left to mourn. Many relatives and friends attended the funeral service, which was conducted by the writer. Words of comfort were spoken from 1 Cor. 15:51; 1 Thess. 4:13; and Rev. 21:1. D. E. Lindsey.

Moore.—Ethel Contee Moore died at her home in Fairmont Heights, D. C., aged 20 years, 2 months, and 22 days. The undersigned had the privilege of baptizing her into the First Seventh-day Adventist Church of Washington, D. C., last May. At the time of her baptism, she was quite low with tuberculosis, to which she finally succumbed Sept. 13, 1912. She gave fullest evidence of a consistent Christian experience, being an obedient and affectionate daughter, loved by all who knew her. Shortly after her baptism, her mother followed her example in uniting with the church. The funeral service was conducted by the writer, assisted by Elder J. L. McElhany. L. A. Hansen.

Shultz.—George Frederick Shultz, son of Elder Henry and Sarah J. Shultz, was born Nov. 19, 1883, and died Oct. 7, 1912, aged 28 years, 10 months, and 18 days. He was converted in early life, and united with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He lived a consistent Christian life, loving God and his fellow men. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, father, mother, three brothers, and two sisters, besides a large circle of friends. He was resigned to the will of God, and the sorrowing relatives and friends are comforted in the hope of the resurrection morning. The funeral service was conducted by the writer, assisted by Elder N. W. Kauble; and the remains were laid to rest in the Lodi cemetery, where he sleeps, awaiting the call of the great Life-giver. C. “The Beautiful”

A snow scene for the cover of the December Signs Magazine. An appreciative scene to many, and attractive and interesting to the unacquainted. The sun hangs low in the sky, and the clouds are so heavy that the orb shines yellow and red through the heavy bank that will soon precipitate the frozen flakes. The beech-trees and the firs cast their bluish purple shadows, and one almost feels the cold. It is a very pleasing cover for this month of the year, and will prove a strong-selling feature of the magazine.

The Contents

“A New Phase of Spiritualism” takes up the announcement of Miss Stead that she has had a communication from her dead father, who was lost with the wreck of the “Titanic.” She makes some very startling statements, and the editor, in writing the article, draws some very contrasting statements on the authority of the Word of God. This article should be given a wide circulation.

“The Heaven-Opposing Powers of Earth” is another article in the series being presented in the magazine from a well-known writer, Mr. Charles L. Taylor. Although embracing history nearly three thousand years old, some important applications are drawn bearing directly upon momentous questions of the present day.

“The Second Coming of Jesus,” by George W. Rine, is given continued prominence in the magazine. This is a very important series of articles.

“The Government and the Trusts,” an article showing how ineffectual the famous law-suit of the government dissolving the Standard Oil Company has turned out to be. Since this gigantic trust has been dissolved by the United States government, it has increased in value about five times. Not much of a dissolution. You will want to read the whole article and the application that is made at the close.

Mrs. E. G. White contributes an article on the times of William Miller. It explains the work of this great man so much misunderstood by the people of to-day.

“The Freedom of the Will,” an illustrated article which shows the real trend of religious laws, or laws uniting church and state, or any measures that tend toward religious persecution.

“Increase of Metals” as a sign of the times, by Frank S. Weston. It is something new, and will be of considerable interest to a large number of our readers on account of its statistics.

“The Bible Reading” is also an interesting feature of the magazine, and, as usual, will have a very comprehensive study on some phase of Bible doctrine.

The Home department has a very interesting contribution from the pen of Mrs. L. D. Avery-Stuttle, the author of “Making Home Happy” and “Making Home Peaceful.” She is a well-known writer, and this is an added attraction to our magazine.

Among many important current topics, those dealing with the revelations of Thomas Lawson are of more than usual interest. He gives in most graphic language conditions of to-day, and points out the remedy. This work is given some consideration in the light of the Bible.

Northern Illinois Medical Missionary and Sanitarium Association

NOTICE is hereby given that the first meeting of the seventh annual session of the Northern Illinois Medical Missionary and Sanitarium Association will be called at 9 A. M., Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1912, to be held in connection with the annual conference to convene at the South Side Forty-sixth Street church, in Chicago, Ill.

Annual reports will be presented, three trustees will be elected for a term of three years, and such other business transacted as may properly come before the meeting. The legal voters of this association are all properly qualified delegates to the conference.

Eight New Canvassers Enter the Field

A LETTER received from the canvassers' institute in Eastern Pennsylvania states that at the close of the institute eight new canvassers are going into the field to sell our books. The canvassers in that conference this year have had splendid success.

Frank F. Mills Bound for Korea

LAST week Brother Frank F. Mills, of the Foreign Mission Seminary and Review and Herald Office, left Washington, en route to Korea. He goes in response to the call for a superintendent for the new Korean printing-office, in Seoul. He sails from San Francisco November 2.

Death of Callie Kenneth Butterfield

ONE of the sad words out of dark and needy mission lands comes in a brief note from Elder C. L. Butterfield, of Korea. Under date of September 25, he writes from Seoul: “Our little boy, Callie Kenneth, died to-day of pneumonia. He was just past eighteen months old. Our hearts are sad. We can only say, God’s will be done.” May God comfort these sorrowing ones in far Korea.

Wisconsin Book and Magazine Sales

A REPORT from Wisconsin gives the encouraging news that during the first nine months of this year they sold $10,742.85 worth of books, and 11,845 copies of our magazines. About twenty-five of our young people have been able to earn scholarships through this means, and are now attending school to receive further preparation for service.

Death of Elder J. B. Goodrich

WORD has been received from Elder W. B. White, president of the Atlantic Union Conference, of the death of Elder J. B. Goodrich, who fell asleep at the home of his son near Pittsfield, Maine, October 9. Elder Goodrich was president of the Maine Conference for fifteen years, and for four years served as president of the Quebec Conference. An appropriate sketch of his life will be printed in our next number.

European Workers Visit Eastern Missions

ACCORDING to their schedule, Elders L. R. Conradi and Guy Dail, of the European Division, should be attending a general meeting of the workers in Egypt this week. The Syrian workers were also to be over from the eastern Mediterranean. From Egypt, the brethren named are to go on to the Abyssinian Mission, later visiting the stations in British and German East Africa.

Many excellent principles that should be recognized in every home in the dealing of parents with their children are presented in this series.

Death of Elder G. K. Owen

LAST week a message from India brought the sad intelligence of the death of Elder G. K. Owen, of that mission. Elder Owen went to India in 1901, thus accompanying Elder J. L. and Mrs. Shaw, the latter being Elder Owen's daughter. He loved the people and work in India, and his faithful service is part of the story of our missionary advance in that great field. Our sympathy is with the children in India, and with his brothers in this country.

Young People Advance Missionary Work

The reports of young people’s societies give cheering evidence of activity in many departments of missionary endeavor. Around the circle of the earth, our youth are giving themselves for God’s service. Just now the secretary of a society in Port of Spain, Trinidad, sends a six months’ report showing hundreds of missionary visits and cottage meetings, and thousands of pages of publications sold and given away.

Australasian Union Reports Substantial Gains

The last Australasian Record brings a report of a council of the Australasian Union Conference Committee, held in September. “Reports made at the council,” we are told, “show substantial gains in all departments.” A number of workers were placed under appointment to the Fiji, Cook, and Society Islands, and to Lord Howe Island. We note that Elder George Teasdale takes the principalship of the Australasian Missionary College, at Avondale, made vacant by the return of Prof. B. F. Machlan to America. Elders J. Pallant and M. Lukens were assigned to general field work in the union. Delegates to the next General Conference were named as follows: J. E. Fulton, B. F. Machlan, G. S. Fisher, and A. H. Piper.

The World in Baltimore Exposition

THE world is to be reproduced in miniature in Baltimore, from Oct. 25 to Nov. 30, 1912. The purpose of “The World in Baltimore” is to show the progress of Christian civilization in every part of the world. In order to do this in the most effective way, lifelike scenes of foreign lands and sections of America in which the work of missionaries is carried on will be set up in the exposition. Each section will be surrounded by beautifully painted scenery, reproducing parts of foreign lands and of our own country. Inside of these scenes there will be erected buildings which will be duplications of the structures that a visitor to a foreign city might look upon. In all, there will be between thirty and forty of these sections. Twelve thousand people, who are being enrolled as volunteer helpers for the exposition from two hundred twenty churches in Baltimore and its vicinity, will impersonate the natives of each country, and most of them will wear characteristic costumes. They will have prepared themselves by careful study to answer the questions of visitors, and to explain everything which a person may see at the exposition.

Saving for Gospel Missions

Those who love the service of the Lord and have a desire to assist in the extension of the gospel work are able to devise many ways and means whereby to secure something to give to the needy cause of missions. One of our sisters writes of saving money by denying herself special table delicacies of which she is very fond. In this way she saved during one week the sum of sixty cents without depriving herself of the necessities of life, but only some of the luxuries. Others perhaps could not economize in this way, but might find other ways. There are many Seventh-day Adventists who, by cutting down useless expenditures, could not only save money for the cause of missions, but benefit themselves physically and spiritually. How much money is spent for candy, chewing-gum, etc., things which do no good, but are positively injurious! If the means wasted in these ways were given to gospel work, the mission treasury would be augmented by several thousand dollars every year.

Harvest Ingathering Mission Offerings

ON Wednesday, October 23, 436,000 copies of the Harvest Ingathering Signs had been sent out by the Pacific Press. It may be necessary to issue another edition to supply the demand. Good reports are being received, showing that success is attending the efforts put forth. The largest offering so far known is one made by a bank of $250. The prospects are good for receiving one of the largest offerings to missions since beginning this Ingathering effort among the people. Every member of the church should have a part in this good work.

Young People’s Missionary Institutes

Last week Miss Matilda Erickson, corresponding secretary of the Young People's Missionary Volunteer Department, left Washington to attend a series of young people's institutes in the West. Institutes have been arranged, we understand, for Nevada, Iowa; College View, Nebr.; Clinton, Mo.; Keene, Tex.; Oakwood, Ala.; and Nashville, Tenn. Elder Meade MacGuire, of Colorado, field secretary of the department, will also attend these institutes.
