The book is well illustrated, and the stories are written in a way to make deep and lasting impressions upon the young minds. The body's framework corresponds interestingly to the framework of the house; the eyes to the windows; the heart to a pumping plant; the nervous system to a telephone system. With the interest thus aroused and held, the children are taught the hygiene and proper care of the body. An excellent book for parents to use in teaching this important subject to the children. Fully illustrated. Price $1.00.

UNCLE BEN'S COBBLESTONES

Is a book that delights both boys and girls, because in it they are learning something new on every page. Uncle Ben talks with his nephew Tom, from the city, about the every-day things as “common as the old cobblestone fence.” Tom learns where common salt comes from, how pins and needles are made, where and how coal is obtained, how glass is made, and of scores of other things used every day, of which little really is generally known. Boys and girls love Uncle Ben and his stories. All the way through them they learn beautiful lessons of trust in Him who has provided the many blessings of life. 221 pages. $1.00, post-paid.

TIGER AND TOM AND OTHER STORIES

Is a book for boys primarily. It has thirty-four stories of thrilling interest and moral worth, such as: Tiger and Tom, Bert's Thanksgiving, The Boy and His Spare Moments, The Way to Safety, The Two Clerks, A Boy's Lesson in Dishonesty.
Every one of the stories is taken from real life, and teaches lessons of special value in the building of character. Attractively printed and illustrated with interesting colored drawings. 224 pages. Price 75 cents, post-paid.

MY GARDEN NEIGHBORS

True stories of “garden” neighbors—the sparrows who learned to imitate the bluebirds, the cat that went wild, and the cowbird that imposed on a sparrow, and many others that entertain and instruct the children. One hundred illustrations, some of them colored. Price $1.00.

“EASY STEPS IN THE BIBLE STORY”

Is a new book for the children which gives a story of the Bible systematically in “easy steps” for the children. It begins with creation, and goes through in a systematic way with stories of the prominent characters to the close of Christ's life on earth. The child can not fail, in reading these, to get an excellent grasp of Bible study. There are more than 600 pages in this book, and it is profusely illustrated with full-page drawings, colored plates, and marginal pictures, all of which help to illustrate and impress the lessons given. Cloth, $3.00; half leather, $4.00; full leather, $5.00.

This section is followed by seventy-six carefully selected and beautifully told stories, covering the principal Bible characters and events in their order. The main feature of each story is illustrated by an engraved colored heading, which adds greatly to its interest. It contains 96 pages. Durably bound in red cloth at 50 cents.

Laborers Together

In 1 Cor. 3:9 we are assured that Christians “are laborers together with God.” The Revised Version says, “We are God’s fellow workers.” What an exalted privilege it is to be called into fellowship in labor with the supreme Creator! We would greatly appreciate being called into fellowship of labor with some of the great men of earth, and such a fellowship might be very desirable and beneficial. But think of what it means to be called into fellowship with the great God, as “laborers together with Him.”
The greatness of the gifts and the blessedness of the joys that our heavenly Father has to offer us are often eclipsed by our allowing ourselves to become absorbed in the near-by things of time and sense. It is necessary for us to give attention to the things of this life, and to see what is lying around us; but we should not allow these things to obscure our view of the still greater and more desirable blessings and privileges that the heavenly Father offers to each one who will accept them. Think of what it means to be associated with Him who is the Creator of every sun and of every world that occupies the vast domain of infinite space. But just such a great privilege as this is the very thing that the text contemplates. We are “laborers together with God,” the infinite Creator.

The Bible’s Warnings Against Prostitution

One of the charges that infidelity has made against the Bible is that certain portions of it are so indecent as to be unfit to read in a refined home. Some of these portions of Scripture to which they refer were those laws and warnings that were given concerning prostitution. But just the same, if those portions of the Scripture had been read, studied, and heeded, we would not have the “social evil,” the “white slave traffic,” and “commercialized vice,” to contend against in this time; and it would not be necessary for some people to say in public the many things that are said that are quite as plain and as much open to the charge of indecency as anything that has been found fault with in the good old Book. It is well for us to understand that Jehovah, the Author of the Bible, is infinite in His knowledge, and He knew very well what to inspire His prophets to write.

Wall Street Financiers and Mobs.

On this page in our issue last week we spoke of the request made by Wall Street financiers for increased numbers of regular troops on Governor’s Island in New York Harbor. By a mistake, our note said 2,500. It should have read 250. Some of the newspaper correspondents from New York are devoting space to a discussion of this suggestion from the Wall Street financiers. The claims of these financial men are that in case of “an earthquake” or of “mob violence,” it would be essential to have troops where they could be brought quickly to protect the immense treasures of the nation that are stored in Wall Street, as well as the treasures of private individuals. The men who are making these requests for troops certainly must hold the popular belief that New York is outside the “earthquake zone,” and therefore their fears are for mob violence rather than for any trouble about earthquakes. And they prefer regular United States troops to the expedient of calling out the state militia, because they know that the militia is more likely to fall in with the mob. These men have their “ear to the ground,” and can hear the rumblings. If there were no dangers from the mob, they would not be taking these precautions. We need to think soberly and seriously in regard to such conditions that prevail. What is their significance?

Knowing When to Speak

Will Carleton expressed an important thought in a quaint way, when he put in the mouth of an editor the question asked of an old farmer, concerning a son whom the father thought to make an editor: “Does he know just how much to know? Does he know how to not know too much?” And the same principle well applies in the matter of speaking,—Does he know just how much to say? and does he know how to not say too much? The tongue is a dangerous member. There would be far fewer quarrels and misunderstandings if such knowledge were general. Of course there are those to be found who will find fault with us whether we do or not do, whether we say or not say; but this we can do,—speak wisely and speak less frequently, and pursuing the even tenor of our way, if we can not say what we ought to say, know how to keep still.

Naval Target Practice and Universal Peace

Reports from the recent target practise of the Atlantic fleet are to the effect that the marks this year are much higher than last, tho the conditions imposed were much more severe than ever before. Each of the navies in all the big nations of the world is putting forth the same strenuous efforts for improvements, and their effectiveness in these lines means more terrible destruction when war does break out. And with all of these strenuous efforts for improvement in war, yet we are told that the world is moving along rapidly in the direction of universal peace.

Agricultural Library Seeks Documents

The College of Agriculture connected with the University of California at Berkeley is desirous of building up a good agricultural library. They desire “house documents in which consular reports and special agricultural reports are found; the proceedings of horticultural, agricultural, forestry, and other agricultural societies of our own and other states; also bulletins and reports of agricultural colleges of other states.” Any one having any documents of the character desired above will please address Mrs. D. L. Bunnell, Agricultural Department Library, Berkeley, California. The university will bear the expense of boxing and pay express or freight on these publications.

New Income Tax Revenue Estimate

Government officials estimate that the new income tax law will yield a revenue of a hundred million annually.

How They Look upon Protestantism.—

This little editorial note in the Western Watchman of August 28, a Roman Catholic paper, with reference to another Roman Catholic paper, incidentally tells us what the editor thinks of Protestantism, and what he thinks the other editor ought to think: “The editor of the Ave Maria is a Canadian and believes in denominational schools. He has the measles bad. He believes that Protestantism is better than no Christianity at all. The Ave Maria has given out a bum note, and a little more of that foolishness will bring it perilously close to the breakers of heterodoxy.”

Turkish Officers Killed in Adrianople

Five Turkish officers were killed in Adrianople recently in a quarrel between the Young Turks and the partisans of Nazim Pasha, the former minister of war who was killed during the demonstration at Constantinople last January. A report comes that the Turks in Thrace have determined to set up an independent Thracian state. Like many other reports from the Balkans, it is uncertain.
