VISIONS AND PROPHECY
Earlier text: Atonement: Two Views of Reconciliation

To Correspondents.

M. WOOD: We think the carcass in Matt. 24: 28, is the wicked; and the eagles that prey upon the carcass are the judgments of God that consume the wicked at the second coming of Christ. In Luke 17: 34-37, which speaks of the wicked being taken by judgments and the righteous escaping, the disciples asked, “Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body [or carcass] is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.” That is, it will not be in any particular locality; but wherever the wicked are, there the judgments of God will find them.
E. R. DAVIS: If you can procure a copy of the REVIEW of Feb. 7, 1870, you will find the question of the three days and three nights, Matt. 12: 40, fully discussed, in an article headed, “The Third Day since These Things Were Done.”
EDITORS REVIEW & HERALD: Having heard a sermon on the intermediate state of the dead not long since, preached from Job 14: 10, I would like a little explanation. The speaker made the statement that, in the original, the word from which man in the first clause of the verse was translated, was a different word from that from which man was translated in the latter clause. He also stated that the word man in the first clause of the verse signified the corporeal, material part of man; the man in the latter clause meant the spiritual part of man. If you think proper, I would like an answer through the REVIEW whether the word man in verse 10 is from different Hebrew words or not: also, whether the word man in the 12th verse in the original is the same as the word man in the first clause of verse 10. ELI GLASCOCK.
ANSWER. There are twelve different words in the Hebrew which are translated, man. Some of them seem to have no appreciable difference of meaning. Man in the first clause of Job 14:10, according to the Hebrew Concordance, is from geh-ver. This word is used in verse 14. “If a man die, shall he live again?” Man in the latter clause of verse 10 (yea, man giveth up the ghost) is from ah-dahm. This is the word that is used in Job 14:1: “Man that is born of woman” &c., and in Job 34:15: “Man shall turn again to dust.” Now if this means the spiritual part of man, as the speaker above referred to declared, then that spiritual part is “born of woman,” and “returns to dust.” The word man in Job 14:12 (man lieth down, &c.) is from still another word, eesh; and everything is affirmed of it that is affirmed of the other words which are translated man. So far as the use of the three words here noticed is concerned, no difference in meaning can be discovered between them.
