LESSON 12.—MARCH 23.—TEMPERANCE LESSON.

Lesson Scripture, Eph. 5:11-21, R.V.
11 “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them; for the things which are done by them in secret it is a shame even to speak of. But all things when they are reproved are made manifest by the light; for everything that is made manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine upon thee.
15 “Look therefore carefully how ye walk, not as unwise, but as wise; redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Wherefore be ye not foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot, but be filled with the Spirit; speaking one to another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; subjecting yourselves one to another in the fear of Christ.”
Golden Text.—“Be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot.” Verse 18.

SUGGESTIVE QUESTIONS.

(1.) What should be our attitude toward sin? Verse 11. Note 1. (2) To what depth of degradation do they go who indulge in such works? Verse 12. (3) How are the works of darkness made manifest? Verse 13. Note 2. (4) What does the Word say to those who are in the dark? Verse 14. Note 3. (5) In what way are we instructed to walk? Verse 15. Note 4. (6) How should we regard the time allotted to us? Why? Verse 16. (7) What should be our attitude toward God? Verse 17. Note 5. (8) Against what habit are we specially warned? What shall we imbibe instead? Verse 18. Note 6. (9) How are Christians to encourage one another? Verse 19. (10) When, for what, to whom, and in whose name, are we to give thanks? Verse 20. (11) How are Christians to regard each other? Verse 21. Note 7.

NOTES.

1. “Unfruitful” in this text means barren of good fruit. Good fruit can not be grown in the dark. “When ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.” Rom. 6:20-22.
2. Light Is a Reprover.—The most effectual reproof of evil is to bring it to the light. “For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.” John 3:20. The best reproof of evil that the Christian can give is to manifest the light of truth in his own conduct. “He that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.” Verse 21. Evil is always reproved by contrast of deeds, rather than by sharpness of words.
3. Christ being the light of the world, those who can not see such a light are surely asleep, blind, or dead. The cold or inactive Christian is reckoned as asleep, which is virtually being dead. “Knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed.” Rom. 13:11. See also Isa. 60:1-3.
4. To “walk circumspectly” means to walk “with watchfulness every way; with attention to guard against surprise or danger, cautiously.” Christ never was taken by surprise, or caught unawares; and the Word says, “He that saith he abideth in Him ought himself also to walk even as He walked.” 1 John 2:6. See Eph. 2:10.
5. “The will of the Lord” is expressed in His law. Ps. 40:7, 8. And David, again prophesying of Christ, says: “Thou through Thy commandments hast made Me wiser than Mine enemies; for they are ever with Me. I have more understanding than all My teachers; for Thy testimonies are My meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Thy precepts.” Ps. 119:98-100. Also John 15:10.
6. “Riot” (or “excess,” as in A. V.) implies utter lawlessness, wastefulness, profligacy; hence opposition to salvation. Such is the tendency of wine-drinking, which here stands for all intoxicants. Drunkenness is evidence of spiritual darkness, for “they that be drunken are drunken in the night.” 1 Thess. 5:7. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” Rom. 13:12-14.
7. Note the guard that is placed on the matter of submitting to one another. It must be “in the fear of Christ,” according to His word. This will always be a guard against compromising with error.

The Restoration from Babylon

To begin March 12, 1902
A series of sixteen articles by Alonzo Trevier Jones
The author traces the history typical of the last day right through the whole series. The following is from the first article, and it well states the object of the series:—
“There is hardly any portion of the Bible story that receives less attention than that relating to the period of the restoration of Israel to their own land, from the captivity of Babylon. And yet there is hardly any portion of the Bible story that is more full of the very life and movement of God in human affairs, hardly any portion more full of valuable lessons. Indeed there is no portion of the Bible story so full as is this of striking illustrations of how, how promptly, and how triumphantly God can interpose with kings and powers in behalf of His cause and His people in the earth.”
The books of the Bible especially embraced in this are: Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, and the period of the world covered in the narrative of over five hundred years—from B. C. 536 to the Crucifixion. We give here the titles of the articles in the series:—
Causes of the Captivity The Release from Captivity Troublous Times The Success of the Samaritans The Work of Haggai and Zechariah The Samaritans Compelled to Help Satan’s Master Stroke “The Hand Upon the Throne of the Lord” The Second Return The Third Return The Fear of God Against Unbrotherliness The Wall Finished and the Full Temple Service Restored The Wall of Jerusalem Dedicated and the Rival Worship of Samaria Established Backsliding to Confirmed Apostasy From Religious to Political The Sceptre Departs from Judah
Is this series not deserving of a very wide circulation? Would you not like to give some of your friends and neighbors the opportunity of reading the whole series?

The Address of W. A. Abernathy Is Desired

The address of W. A. Abernathy is desired. We would be glad if any one knowing his whereabouts would communicate the same to the editor of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES.

Coming Photographs and Article

We give in our next two photographic reproductions of the Sanitarium fire and ruins, which will be of interest to our readers.
“British Protestant Demonstration” is the title of an interesting article from London, which will appear in our next. It came just too late for this. It sets forth the true situation in Britain as regards her attitude toward Rome. The gentleman who writes it is a trained and keen observer of human affairs and the religious trend.

Conditional Immortality

The religious world has been stirred by Dr. Charles H. Parkhurst’s recent utterance anent the death of the soul. The doctor, very logically and Scripturally, finds nothing to warrant natural immortality. The Literary Digest remarks that the view is “not a new one.” We should say not. We may trace it back through many and eminent moderns to the apostles and the Bible itself, and back through the Bible from the Revelation to Genesis. And yet one paper, the Star of Zion, of Charlotte, N. C., says:—
A pious shudder runs over the Christian church as it reads this erroneous, diabolical, and damaging theory that the soul is not immortal.
O!! Evidently the Star does not hope in Jesus as Life-giver. It seems to prefer the words of that other character, “Ye shall not surely die; ye shall be as God.” We are glad that Dr. Parkhurst has the courage of his convictions.

Not His Undoing.

The last February number of Public Opinion has an article entitled, “The Undoing of Dowie.” The ground of its thought is the decision of Judge Murray F. Tuley, of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, to compel a settlement of a claim of $200,000 made by Stevenson against Dowie. As the result a receiver was appointed, but afterward removed, as the claim was settled out of court. The Chicago Chronicle thinks that the decision of a judge so highly and universally respected ought to carry great weight, and put a check to Dowie’s success. It says: “The people of Chicago and the northwest, among whom Dr. Dowie has made an astonishing impression, have the deliberate judgment of a great and universally respected magistrate that, so far as his business methods are concerned, Dr. Dowie is a pretender and a fraud, exerting an influence as an agent of the Almighty which is to be challenged, if for no other reason, by the fact that his methods are destructive of the rights of others, and assuming to conduct his affairs and those of his dupes in contempt of human law and human ideas of honesty and justice. When business matters are removed from the sphere of law, and are made to depend upon the divine or religious pretenses of a single individual, the motives of that person must be judged by the results. In the case of Dr. Dowie it has been seen that all of his supernatural claims contributed to one end—his own enrichment. Money and property passing out of the possession of his disciples came inevitably into that of himself. On examination the genuineness of his greed became as evident as the genuineness of the renunciation of his victims.” But this will not check Mr. Dowie’s success. There are many afflicted souls who desire physical healing above all things else. Many others are looking for “signs,” as did those of old who rejected Jesus. These classes will be deceived by Mr. Dowie’s pretensions and seeming success, with but a superficial examination at best of the authority of his claims in the light of the Word. His threefold claim that he is Elijah, the Prophet like unto Moses, and the Messenger of the Covenant (the last two of which refer to Jesus Christ) ought to be sufficient to convince all Christians that Dr. Dowie’s pretensions are baseless. He is deceiving and being deceived.

Our Home Department.

We are receiving most excellent articles for our Home department to follow the fruitfully suggestive science articles by Prof. F. Griggs. We wonder how many parents are studying Professor Griggs’ articles. They are full of helpfulness to fathers and mothers of active boys and girls. The articles now coming for the Home department are from that well-known worker and writer for children and mothers, Dr. Mary Wood Allen, editor of the American Mother. These are written especially for the SIGNS OF THE TIMES. Dr. David Paulson of Chicago, editor of the Life Boat, is also sending us a series of interesting, practical talks on Health, for the Home. These are worth in medical advice many times the cost of the paper.

Why Should It Be Otherwise?

—According to the Literary Digest of March 1, it seems to be considered a wonderful thing that two scholarly Christian men, in writing for a Bible Dictionary, should be loyal to the Gospels and the divinity of our Lord. It shows the drift of Christianity. It is getting so far away that the loyal man becomes signally prominent. And yet this ought to be the rule, not the exception.

Pointers

Pointers.—(1) Among the initial measures of nominal self-government in Porto Rico is the introduction of a bill in the house of delegates for the regulation of Sunday labor. (2) The Presbyterian Creed Revision Committee has gone back on the declaration of the Confession of Faith that the pope is “the man of sin, antichrist, son of perdition.” Technically the declaration is not correct, as the “man of sin” is not the pope personally; it is the Papacy, which the pope represents. However, it seems that the committee did not design merely to correct a technical error, but to renounce a well-established Protestant principle.

A MOST INSTRUCTIVE STUDY

is the series of articles begun in this number by Alonzo T. Jones, on the “Restoration from Babylon.” The first one appears in this issue. Read that, and you will wish to read the rest. It is entitled, “Causes of the Captivity” of God’s people in Babylon. The articles to come are as follows:—
The Release from Captivity,
Troublous Times,
The Success of the Samaritans,
The Work of Haggai and Zechariah,
The Samaritans Compelled to Help,
Satan’s Master Stroke,
The Hand upon the Throne of the Lord,
The Second Return,
The Third Return,
The Fear of God against Unbrotherliness,
The Wall Finished; Full Temple Service Restored,
Wall of Jerusalem Dedicated; Rival Worship of Samaria Established,
Backsliding to Confirmed Apostasy,
From Religious to Political,
The Scepter Departs from Judah.
Eternal and vital principles are herein set forth in striking object-lessons for the people of God in the last days. Read them in these studies. Circulate them among your friends and neighbors.

The Trillionaire.

The one-half billionaire is already in existence, if not the billionaire. No one knows the worth of John D. Rockefeller’s property. It is doubtless paying a fair interest on a billion now. But now men are talking of the trillionaire. For instance, President Dickerson, of the American Tin Plate trust, said at a banquet in Boston, the 26th ult., “We can see farther than our grandfathers could, but the twentieth century will see men capable of dealing with fourteen or fifteen figures as readily as our grandfathers dealt with seven figures.” Here is what fifteen figures mean:—
$100,000,000,000,000.
No one has the time to figure it out, and before the world reaches that as the property of any one man, the “miseries” of the prophet will be upon the rich. There were many of our grandfathers who saw eternal justice and judgment, righteousness and equity, between man and man. And that is a long way beyond the mountain of gold that is erected over the blasted and ruined hopes of man and nations. But that mountain, sometimes dwindling to the size of a dollar, shuts eternity from the view of many; and the only true view and long view is the eternal. There all will be trillionaires.

Boiled Water

Boiled Water.—Many think that boiled water is pure; but this is by no means the case. In the first place, it does not kill all the germs. A. L. Wood, M.D., of Brooklyn, N. Y., is quoted as saying that it kills only the feeblest and those the least injurious. Professor Percy Frankland, Ph.D., F.R.S., a noted English scientist and recognized authority on water, says, we are told, that “the germs which propagate epidemic or zymotic diseases may be boiled three hours, and yet not be destroyed.” In the second place, if all the germs are destroyed, their dead carcasses remain as well as the poison they excrete, and the water containing this dead matter furnishes an excellent soil for the propagation of other germs. In the third place, the longer water is boiled, the more impure does it become, unless it be boiled in air-tight vessels. If a gallon of water be boiled to a pint, the pint contains nearly all the impurities of the gallon. And yet boiled water may be beneficial in two ways: (1) Boiling softens the water, or deposits the mineral on the bottom and sides of the kettle; (2) If the water be filtered soon after boiling, the organic substances, the dead carcasses, will be removed.

Death of a Great Englishman.

Dr. Newman Hall, a noted Congregational minister, died in London, February 18, at the age of nearly eighty. His most famous pastorate was in the Rowland Hill Chapel. From the outbreak of the Civil War in this country he championed the cause of the North, and went all over England talking on the principles involved. After the war was over, he visited this country twice, lecturing largely to allay the feeling against England. He once offered prayer at the opening of Congress, praying for the President of the United States and Queen Victoria, and preached on a Sunday, at the invitation of Speaker Colfax, in the House of Representatives to members of both Houses. He was a strong advocate of total abstinence from intoxicating liquors. He was a good and great man, who evidently lived to his light.

Sin Brings Forth Death

“Sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.” It always does this, however beautiful it may appear.
