LESSON 11.—JULY 13.—CLEANSING OF THE SANCTUARY.

Final Disposal of Sins.

[Note to the Student.—These lessons are not designed to be exhaustive, but suggestive. In references to the “Desire of Ages,” in the lessons, the subscription edition is referred to. Those who have only the trade edition will find the matter in chapters 1, 4, 11, 27, 77, 78; also read “Patriarchs and Prophets,” chapters 5 and 30. “Christ Our Advocate,” Bible Students’ Library No. 129 (price, 10 cents), and “Looking unto Jesus” (price, $1.00) will be found a great help. The SIGNS OF THE TIMES will have an article on the subject of each lesson this quarter by J. O. Corliss. Read these articles in connection with the study of the lesson. We have not space to print all the scriptures. Let the student study them carefully from the Bible. Those printed are from the Revised Version.]
7 “But into the second the high priest alone, once in the year, not without blood, which he offereth for himself, and for the errors of the people.” 23 “It was necessary therefore that the copies of the things in the heavens should be cleansed with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ entered not into a holy place made with hands, like in pattern to the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear before the face of God for us; 25 nor yet that He should offer Himself often; as the high priest entereth into the holy place year by year with blood not his own; 26 else must He often have suffered since the foundation of the world; but now once at the end of the ages hath He been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.”
23 “And they indeed have been made priests many in number, because that by death they are hindered from continuing; but He, because He abideth forever, hath His priesthood unchangeable. Wherefore also He is able to save to the uttermost them that draw near unto God through Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such a High Priest became us, holy, guileless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens.”
5 “And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two goats for a sin-offering, and one ram for a burnt-offering.” 7 “And he shall take the two goats, and set them before the Lord at the door of the tent of meeting. And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the Lord, and 8 the other lot for Azazel. 9 And Aaron shall present the goat upon which the lot fell for the Lord, and offer him for a sin-offering; 10 but the goat, on which the lot fell for Azazel, shall be set alive before the Lord, to make atonement for him, to send him away for Azazel into the wilderness.”
27 “And whosoever toucheth those things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.” 30 “And the priest shall offer the one for a sin-offering, and the other for a burnt-offering; and the priest shall make atonement for her before the Lord for the issue of her uncleanness.”
27 “Howbeit on the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement; it shall be an holy convocation unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord. 28 And ye shall do no manner of work in that same day; for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. 29 For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from his people. 30 And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any manner of work in that same day, that soul will I destroy from among his people. 31 Ye shall do no manner of work; it is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 32 It shall be unto you a sabbath of solemn rest, and ye shall afflict your souls; in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye keep your Sabbath.”

SUGGESTIVE QUESTIONS.

1. How often did the high priest go into the most holy place? Heb. 9:7. (Ex. 30:10.)
2. How often does our High Priest go into the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary? Verses 25, 26, 12. Note 1.
3. What was the offering made for the people on that day? Lev. 16:5. (Num. 29:7-11.)
4. What was done with the two goats? How many were for the Lord? Then could both goats represent the Lord? Lev. 16:7, 8, margin. Note 2.
5. What was then done with the goat upon whom the Lord’s lot fell? Verse 9.
6. What was done with the blood of this sin-offering? Verse 15.
7. For how much of the sanctuary was atonement made? Verses 16-19.
8. What besides the sanctuary received the benefit of this atonement? Verse 17. (Lev. 16:6, 33, 34.)
9. What did this ceremony do for the sanctuary and the altar? Verses 18, 19. (Eze. 45:18-20.)
10. What did it do for the people? Verse 30.
11. What was done with their sins that the people, priests, and sanctuary might be free? Verses 20-27. (Rev. 20:2, 3.)
12. How was the day of atonement to be observed by the people? What would be the result if they did their own work or did not afflict their souls? Lev. 23:27-32. Note 3. As this was the day when every case was decided, what day must it represent?
13. For what purpose does Christ go into the most holy place in the heavenly sanctuary? When does He enter in? Heb. 9:23-26. Note 4.
14. Has the exact time “in the end of the world” been appointed for the cleansing of the sanctuary, that is to say, for the work of the judgment?
“Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said unto that certain one which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the continual burnt-offering, and the transgression that maketh desolate, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred evenings and mornings; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.” Dan. 8:13, 14.
“Inasmuch as He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead.” Acts 17:31.

NOTES.

See article in this paper, “Blotting Out of Sin,” read “Great Controversy,” chapter 23; “Looking unto Jesus,” chapters 30, 31.
1. Each year’s service in the earthly sanctuary was a type of the whole work of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary.
2. The scapegoat could not typify Christ, because only one lot was for the Lord. The Hebrew word for “scapegoat,” as given in the margin, is “Azazel.” The Syriac has “Azazil,” “the angel (strong one) who revolted.”
3. This was to be a day of atonement, or “at-onement,” as representing the time when God’s people shall be fully made one with Him. “Now a mediator is not a mediator of one” (Gal. 3:20), so when God’s people have all been made one with Him, they will no longer need a mediator. Christ will have finished His work as priest. Atonement was to be made for all the sins of Israel. Lev. 16:34. No more sins will, therefore, be committed by any of them after the day represented by the day of atonement is over. “It shall be an holy convocation.” Then, in the antitypical day of atonement, they that feared the Lord spake often one to another. “Not forsaking the assembling of yourselves together; … but exhorting one another, and so much the more as ye see the day approaching.” “Ye shall afflict your souls.” So now we are exhorted to “repent, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.” This day of atonement is the time of the blotting out of sins. Every sin, then, must be confessed. “And offer an offering made by fire.” This offering made by fire was the burnt-offering, which represented consecration. “Ye shall do no manner of work therein, for it is a day of atonement.” “It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest.” So in the antitype we must cease wholly from our own works of the flesh. “For he that is entered into His rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from His.” Heb. 4:10. Our own works are works of sin. Gal. 5:19-21. The ceasing from physical labor on that day was an outward object-lesson of the ceasing from sin, which must be done fully before the day of atonement is over; then it will be indeed a Sabbath of rest to our souls.
4. We find from these verses that it is necessary that heavenly things should be purified; and that, as the high priest in the earthly sanctuary entered in every year with the blood of others to cleanse it, so our High Priest, with His own blood (verse 12), enters in once, “in the end of the world,” to put away sin, or cleanse the sanctuary, by the blood of the sacrifice which had already been made on the cross when He gave Himself for our sins.

BIBLE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS CONCERNING MAN.

By Alonzo T. Jones. Bible Students' Library, No. 76. Pacific Press Pub. Co., Oakland, Cal. 16 pp.; 2 cents.

On the Down Grade

On the Down Grade.— Prophecies in both Daniel and the Revelation indicate and clearly predict that this nation, which started so grandly, will go the way of her prototype, Rome, and meet at last eternal ruin. Her first evidences of national decay are loss of principle, decay of conscience, lowering of moral standards. And among the saddest things in this nation to-day is the manifest loss of conscience in private and public life. An instance of this is found in the government’s dealing with Cuba. Only three short years ago the American Congress gravely declared that,—
“The United States hereby disclaims any disposition or intention to exercise sovereignty, jurisdiction, or control over said island, except for the pacification thereof, and asserts its determination, when that is accomplished, to leave the government, and the control of the government, to its people.”
Cuba is pacified, elections have been held without any disorder, and the people of the “Pearl of the “Antilles”” have drawn up a constitution for their supposedly independent island-republic. But this is denied. The constitution does not suit Cuba’s big neighbor. Cuba’s independence is padlocked. The latest news is that the military administration of this country will continue another year. The New York Independent well says: “And so the resolutions of ‘1898 seem very far away in the dim past, altho they are only three years old. The solemn promise given in them has been broken, and the cynics of the Old World jeer at us when they talk or write about it. . . . The stain on the honor of the United States can not be effaced by their [Cuban’s] unwilling submission.” But all this Cuban matter is but one of a series of steps in the nation’s retrogression. To see this even more clearly, read the series of articles, begun in this issue, by Alonzo T. Jones. They will close with the consideration of the Supreme Court decision. Study these articles.

Papal Influence in the Philippines

A despatch from Rome states that the Italia, a paper published in that place, says it “has authority for the statement that the pope, thru Cardinal Rampolla, the Papal Secretary of State, has asked President McKinley to send a representative to the Vatican to treat with the authorities as to the position of the religious bodies in the Philippines.” The source from which this statement comes would indicate that it has a substantial foundation. It is another one of the indications of the aggressiveness of the Papacy. The Lord has already told that the Papal Church would regain her former power, and that her power, when regained, will be exercised over all the world. It is well to keep our eyes on the events that are clearly fulfilling prophecy.

Pacific Union Conference Mission Work

Next week will be given a brief review in our Missions Department of the work in Pacific Union Conference.

Ask, and It Shall Be Given You

Among the stirring, helpful addresses given at the late California Conference was one by Mrs. E. G. White on Prayer. This will soon be given to the readers of the SIGNS in two articles, entitled, “Ask, and It Shall Be Given You.”

Needy India

We are told by missionaries that 100,000,000 of India’s women can neither read nor write; that one in five of India’s women are widows; that in Bengal alone 7,000 child-widows are less than four years of age; that India’s idols are 350,000,000, or 33,000,000 more than her people. Christian sister, does not your heart respond to India’s needs? Read the article in our Missions Department by Miss Burrus, and see if it does not touch your heart, even so as to affect purpose and purse.

The Peace Christ Gives

Peace is not a feeling, but a condition. Let it be settled forever that God has naught against the sinner. He is for every soul. But man is in rebellion against God. And “there is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.” But when the wicked man comes to Christ, gives up his own way and will, and surrenders all, then there is peace. The poor soul, in darkness for years, may not realize this, yet it is true. Peace has its feeling, and that is blessed rest. He who takes hold of God’s strength, and makes peace with Him, will find the rest which Christ alone can give.
It is a blessing that some men are too honest to be diplomats. Blunt old General Adna R. Chaffee is among them. He tells us, according to an Eastern paper, that “whatever the original provocation, “China owes the allies nothing at this time. There “is no justice in imposing an indemnity of more than “$300,000,000.” All that the Boxers have done has been more than offset by the needless “expeditions” of the forces of various powers, by the massacre of whole villages, by the wholesale looting, by the wanton murder of thousands who were innocent, by the impoverishment of whole provinces, the devastation and destruction of cities, and the overturning of all government. The New York World very properly asks: “If the generals of the European powers and “the land agents whom they compel the Chinese to “receive as ministers to Peking could not prevent “these terrible crimes, wherein are the Chinese “rulers worse, who could not restrain the Boxers? “If the generals and the ministers could restrain “their troops and did not, wherein are the Chinese “rulers worse, even if they did connive at Boxer outrages? China owes the powers nothing. The balance against her is canceled.” The books of God may show a different trial-balance than the books of nations.

Why Not the All-sufficient Word?

—The Christian Work (an independent Presbyterian journal) said in its issue of May 23, of Presbyterian revision:—
“First, the church desires some change in its creedal statement.”
“Second, that this change must not impair the integrity of the system of doctrine contained in the confession.”
“Third, it is in the mind of the church that the confession shall be interpreted throughout in harmony with the teachings of Scripture regarding the infinite mercy of God.”
“Fourth, that all returns indicate that a plurality of the presbyteries desire that changes should be made by some new statement of present doctrine.”
Now if a change is desired and demanded; if this change must not impair the integrity of the system of doctrine of the confession; and if this change must be understood as being in harmony with the Scripture, we are led to ask, Why not go to the Word? Why not cast away forever the human and take the divine? Why not take the changeless but ever-expanding Word of God? Is it not sufficient? How can the human help the divine? Why fetter human souls by such dead weights as human creeds?

The Crown Prince’s Welcome in Australia

It was no mean, parsimonious, or cold-hearted welcome that the Australian Empire gave the crown prince, who was sent thither by the late Queen Victoria and King Edward VII. to congratulate the Australian people on their federal union. The illustrations in the Melbourne Argus of May 7 clearly show that the welcome, the display, the gorgeous magnificence of all was truly and grandly royal. The occasion emphasized the unity of the great British Empire, which has done so much for religious freedom in the world. May that nation still stand for freedom till the Lord’s work is accomplished in the earth.

Is It Faith or Infidelity?

Is It Faith or Infidelity?—The Advance of Chicago thinks that the Chicago Theological Seminary did right in accepting (really forcing) the resignation of Dr. Gilbert, who teaches that belief in “the metaphysical union of Christ with God” and “the pre-existence” of Christ are not “essential.” Of this higher criticism the Advance says: “The criticism which began with the Old-Testament prophets has extended to the Great Prophet Himself—Jesus Christ. All that is supernatural in His birth, in His life, is being eliminated.” But the Congregationalist, of Boston, trying to stand on both sides of the fence, says that Dr. Gilbert’s main points of Biblical interpretation “are in general accord with the views of a large number of modern Christian scholars.” One can not wonder how, in the face of such things, Roman Catholicism is making such progress. Protestantism is honeycombed all thru with higher criticism—rank infidelity, and there are many who demand something more positive, and being ignorant of the Bible, they turn to Catholicism.

Clericalism in Europe

“Clericalism in Europe.”—Old controversies are being revived, says the Literary Digest of June 1, in introducing many testimonies to this effect: “Beginning in a few sporadic religious incidents in several European countries, the battle between clericalism and its enemies has widened into a campaign which is now agitating the continent of Europe from Lisbon [on the west] to St. Petersburg [in the east].” In France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Austria-Hungary the contest is progressing simultaneously. It is even now exercising a profound influence on continental politics, declares the St. James Gazette (London). Of course, all know that the reason of this enmity to the Catholic clergy comes because of their intermeddling with politics. All this is ominous of the final struggle between tyranny and liberty.

The Revelation for the Last Days

“The Revelation” is especially a message for the last days. It reveals great truths; it warns against great perils; it anticipates great reforms to take place just before Christ comes. The benedictions given at beginning and close indicate this also. At the very first we read: “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein; for the time is at hand.” Ch. 1:3. The blessing is not in reading or hearing, but in reading and hearing and doing. And at the close of this wonderful series of visions we read, “Behold, I come quickly; blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.” Ch. 22:7. But he who keeps the sayings of this book must understand them, and must live in those days just preceding Christ’s coming.

War and the Principles of Peace

In speaking of the large and expensive warships that are being builded in these days by the various nations, the New York World says: “The stakes “are high in the game of empire, and the final losses, “when all these four to six million-dollar warships “get together and ‘have it out,’ will be gigantic. The “next great naval battle may easily see $100,000,000 “worth of property, wrung by many years of oppressive taxation from the people, sunk in an hour.” What a terribly cruel and destructive thing war is! And how zealous every Christian should be in disseminating and cultivating the principles of peace and righteousness. By so doing we may cut off some of the cruelties that otherwise would be visited upon the children of men.

Leprosy in the Philippines

Among the assets in the Philippines, for which the United States paid twenty million dollars, are twenty thousand persons afflicted with that dread, loathsome, infectious, contagious disease. It is said to be widely spread over the Philippine archipelago.
