It is a joy to open the Word of God with you today to explore what the Creator has revealed about our physical well-being. When we look at the scriptures, we see that God’s instructions are never arbitrary; they are the loving counsel of a Father who desires His children to be healthy in body, mind, and spirit.
The Biblical Distinction of Meats
The distinction between animals that are fit for food and those that are not is a truth that spans the entire history of the Bible. Even before the law was given at Sinai, Noah understood this difference.
"Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female." - Genesis 7:2
God established a clear physical standard for land animals to be considered clean: they must both chew the cud and have a completely split hoof. The swine is specifically identified as failing this test.
"And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you." - Leviticus 11:7-8
Why the Swine is Unfit
The Lord identifies the pig as "unclean" because of its biological nature and habits. Swine were designed by God to be scavengers of the earth—creatures that consume filth and decaying matter to help clean the environment. Because they do not have a complex digestive system like ruminants (animals that chew the cud), the toxins and impurities they eat are more quickly incorporated into their own tissues.
Eating such flesh introduces these impurities into our own bodies, which can cloud the mind and weaken the physical constitution. God desires His people to be a "peculiar people"—set apart and holy in every aspect of life.
"For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." - Leviticus 11:44
A Question of the Heart and Health
In the book of Daniel, we see a powerful example of how choosing a clean diet affects one's relationship with God. Daniel and his friends refused to defile themselves with the "king's meat," which included foods forbidden by God's law.
"But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself." - Daniel 1:8
As a result of their faithfulness to these health principles, God blessed them with physical vigor and mental clarity that far surpassed those who ignored these laws.
The Spiritual Significance
Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. What we put into our bodies affects our ability to discern the "still, small voice" of God. If our blood is impure and our nerves are irritated by unwholesome food, it becomes difficult to focus on spiritual truths.
The Bible even looks forward to the final judgment, noting that God takes our dietary choices seriously when they involve a deliberate disregard for His light.
"They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD." - Isaiah 66:17
Applying This Today 🙏
Choosing to follow God’s dietary laws is an act of worship and trust. It is a recognition that our Maker knows what is best for the "machine" He created.
Trust the Creator: Recognize that these laws are based on natural health principles that do not change.
Seek Clarity: By eating what God has "sanctified" or set apart for food 1 Timothy 4:4-5, you keep your mind clear to understand His will.
Honor the Temple: Remember that your physical health is a gift to be preserved for God’s glory.
May the Lord guide you as you seek to honor Him in everything you do, even in what you eat and drink! 📖✨
