Divine Judgment: The Three Swords of Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha
How did God use a prophet's word to 'slay' those who escaped the sword?
And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

This passage reveals the divine plan to execute judgment upon the house of Ahab through three chosen instruments: Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha 1 Kings 19:15-17. While each person played a distinct role in the political and spiritual history of Israel, they were collectively appointed by God to ensure that apostasy was punished and the worship of Baal was eradicated from the land.
The Three Instruments of Judgment
God commanded Elijah to prepare three successors who would act as a "sword" against the prevailing idolatry of the nation 1 Kings 19:15-16.
Hazael of Syria: He was anointed to be a scourge from without, bringing foreign wars and desolation upon unrepentant Israel.
Jehu son of Nimshi: He was appointed as the minister of vengeance within the kingdom to shake the house of Ahab to its foundations.
Elisha the Prophet: His mission was to continue the spiritual work of Elijah, utilizing the power of the prophetic word to complete the judgment on those who escaped the physical sword.
Hazael: The Scourge of Israel ⚔️
God permitted Hazael to ascend the throne of Syria to punish the Israelites for their continued rebellion and weakness. When Elisha met Hazael in Damascus, he wept as he foresaw the terrible cruelties Hazael would perpetrate against the children of Israel. Hazael eventually smote Israel in all their coasts, significantly reducing their military power and capturing territory east of the Jordan. This suffering was a merciful providence intended to lead the people to inquire after God once their heathen temptations were removed.
Jehu: The Sword of Execution 🏹
Jehu was anointed by a young prophet sent by Elisha with the specific commission to smite the house of Ahab and avenge the blood of the prophets. He carried out this work with a characteristic "furious" driving and a zeal that resulted in the deaths of King Joram of Israel, King Ahaziah of Judah, and the wicked Queen Jezebel. Jehu also used subtlety to gather and execute all the worshippers of Baal, effectively destroying Baal out of Israel. However, while he was an instrument of judgment, he failed to walk in the law of the Lord with all his heart, continuing the sins of Jeroboam 2 Kings 10:31.
Elisha: The Prophetic Word 🕊️
The mention of Elisha "slaying" those who escaped the sword is understood in a figurative sense, referring to the power of the word he was commissioned to speak. As the successor to Elijah’s mission, Elisha represented the "still small voice" that followed the fire and the storm, seeking to win souls even while the judgments were being accomplished. Elisha’s long life of ministry saw the fulfillment of these judgments, and on his deathbed, he still desired to leave a blessing for the people he loved.
Spiritual Lessons and Warnings
The Danger of a "Jehu Spirit": We are cautioned against manifesting a harsh, Bustling, or self-complacent zeal that lacks the gentleness of Christ. True reformation should come from a heart softened by the Holy Spirit, speaking words as gentle as dew rather than a torrent of unbefitting words.
The Unsubdued Heart: The history of Hazael serves as a warning that the natural heart is deceitful and can sink to depths of evil if not under God's control. Many, when warned of their potential for evil, might indignantly ask, "Is thy servant a dog?" only to later perform the very deeds they once abhorred.
Divine Mercy in Judgment: God's judgments are always tempered with mercy; He permits calamity only to break the hold of sin and turn the faces of His people heavenward 2 Kings 13:23.
