“Like Leaves of Autumn”

That is the way the Bible Students’ and Apples of Gold Library numbers are beginning to circulate. The fact that

6,000 PAGES PER HOUR

calculated on a ten-hour day basis, were sold last month, leads us to hope that 1899 may witness a complete fulfilment of this prophecy.

Persecution for Keeping the Sabbath

Is it not strange that a Christian association should refuse to allow a paper in their reading-room for the one sole reason that it taught the obligation of the seventh-day Sabbath, the day kept by the Founder of Christianity? And yet this paper was refused such a place, for such a reason, just recently. The loss is not ours. But we are made sad that Christ’s professed children should reject one that came in His name, teaching the observance of the things which He taught and practised. But, more than this, to-day men are lying in jail because they belong to a denomination that keeps the day commanded of God and kept by Christ. Is not the secret of this found in these words of Christ: “They all put you out of the synagogs; yea, the time cometh; that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor Me.” John 16:2, 3. We are sorry for the persecuted; but we are sorrier for the persecutors.

The New-born Christ.

The birth of Jesus Christ was a great thing for this world. In it God identified Himself with the whole human family. It is not, however, an event which should be remembered only once in a year. It is of continual and eternal benefit. It is a blessing every day and every moment to the children of men. To celebrate it once a year, on Christmas, is to hide its precious lesson, is to degrade the great Gift. While Jesus was born on some day of the year, that day, it is historically certain, was not December 25; and while He was born within one day, He was born for all time, one with humanity. But He would come closer to us than that, He would be born within us, so to speak; He would make us partakers of His own divine nature, even as He is made partaker of our human nature. He would be God within us, “the Word made flesh” in us through Jesus, the Son of God, the eternal Word. Knowing this, we will celebrate His birth every day, not by modified heathen orgies or customs, not by eating and drinking to the flesh, but by the new life of Christ, formed within, the hope of glory. O reader, this is better than all Christmas celebrations! “Taste, and see that the Lord is good.”

Unordered Copies of the Signs

We send no papers from this office to individuals without pay in advance.
When persons receive copies without ordering them, they are sent by other parties, and we can give no information in regard to them. Persons thus receiving copies of the “Signs” are not indebted to the office, and will not be called upon to pay for them. Please read the papers you may receive, and hand them to your friends to read.

Quarter-Centennial Issue

Our next issue will bear date of January 11, 1899, as the Quarter-Centennial issue is a double number.

Quarter-Centennial Issue

We call attention to the advertisement, on another page, of our Quarter-Centennial issue. Read it, and help us to extend its circulation.

Columbus’ Wise and Worthy Example

We present in our next issue an article from the pen of Alonzo T. Jones, entitled, “Columbus’ Wise and Worthy Example.” It is an interesting article, on vital issues. It involves the Cuban educational question among other things, and this government’s relation to the same. No reader of the SIGNS can afford to miss it.

Health and Home Articles for the Coming Year

We are making arrangements for the coming year for practical health and home articles by those of experience. Among other things will be vegetarian recipes and menus for those who desire to leave the increasingly unwholesome flesh diet for the purer fare of fruits, grains, vegetables, and nuts. We are sure our readers will be pleased with this. We hope to make each department worth the price of the paper.

More Leaves

The artist in drawing the picture reproduced on page 15 must have had in mind some sparsely-leaved deciduous tree of California; certainly not the full-fledged oaks and maples and basswoods of the East, which drop one leaf upon another, making carpets at times inches deep, and which old Boreas piles in great windrows and heaps. So is God’s truth of His last message to go. Picture to your mind a more prolific tree.

A Mistake.

We regret that the article by J. W. Watt on “The Third Commandment,” which appeared in the SIGNS of November 17, was printed under the heading “The Second Commandment, Concluded.” The intelligent reader, however, would know that the article pertained to the third precept, not the second. The mistake easily occurred, because the articles were not separated in the manuscript. Each article should have begun a new page.

Columbia Calendar for 1899.

—It has come to our table again, the best desk calendar published in the United States. It contains a leaf for every day in the year, with sufficient blank space for whatever date and memory spurs are necessary. These leaves preserved would form a diary of the year. This valuable little calendar is mounted on a neat little stand, and is furnished for five two-cent stamps. Address, Calendar Dept., Pope Manufacturing Co., Hartford, Conn.

A Happy New Year

We feel, as we close this, another volume of THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES, that this expression of praise is due to God, who has helped us through the past year in so many ways, in the increase of circulation, in the valuable lessons taught us through His Word and providence; for the willing, earnest, Christian helpers and co-workers connected with the paper; for such generous contributors and friends throughout the field; and for the good prospect before us. There are many dark clouds looming above earth’s horizon, but “the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men,” and will deliver all who trust Him. In Him are safety and blessing, and in His name, therefore, we wish all our readers A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

BE PATIENT AND HOPEFUL.

Orders for our Quarter-Centennial issue are coming in faster than we can fill them. We have four presses running, three two-revolution flat-bed presses on the cover, and our web-perfecting press on the paper itself. Our large fast press is running twenty-four hours a day. Our folding-room is crowded with workers. Our wire-stitchers (and an extra one has been added to our force) are running ceaselessly; and we are employing as many workers as we can find place for in our large building. We have wished many times that we had another press of equal capacity to our web-perfecting Cottrell. Two other presses are at work on our regular edition of the SIGNS. Manager, superintendent, press-room, periodical department, folding-room, mailing-room, are working to the last limit of time and endurance; and we are also praying that in it all God may direct. Yet, dear friends in the field, we are behind your orders. But be patient and hopeful. We are doing the best we can to do good work, and all we can of it. The first copies of our Quarter-Centennial were mailed December 6, and we are turning them out at the rate of 25,000 to 30,000 per day. We are filling large orders in part, and will send the balance later. Marked copies are being sent to the 20,000 editors in the United States. This means much in marking and wrapping. But we expect to meet all your orders, tho a little late; for “the hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek Him,” and the work is His.

THE DIVINE UNITY

“There is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we unto Him.” He is the Creator of all things, the Author of our existence. Why then should we not serve Him with all the heart? He is the “one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all,” and we are created “unto Him.” Why not meet in Him the object of our creation?
“And one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through Him.” He is, under God, our Creator and Redeemer. We are bound to Him by His own life. We are unto God through Christ. He is the one “door,” the one “way.” Why not enter the Door open for all? Why not go in the way which leads to everlasting life?
“There is one body, and one Spirit, even as also ye were called in one hope of your calling.” The “one body” is the body, the church, of Jesus Christ, of which He alone is the Head. That which binds the body to the Head is not laws or councils or creeds of men, but the one Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit which quickens, sanctifies, and unites to the divine Head the human members. “For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of the Spirit.” It is not a divisible Spirit; it is always one, as the light of the sun is one. It is in the Father; it is in Christ; it is in all the members of the church of Christ. Why not receive the Spirit and become one with the Father and the Son? Who would not be bound up in the “bundle of His life”?

IN 1899

We shall place before our readers ten or more important articles on “Church and State in the United States,” by Alonzo T. Jones.
Ten or more articles on the great subject of our Lord’s sacrifice and mediatorial work, by Uriah Smith.
Ten or more articles on the coming of the Lord, by Francis M. Wilcox.
Ten or more articles, parallels between our own times and great crises of the past, by Percy T. Magan.
Ten or more articles on life and immortality only in Christ, by John O. Corliss.
Ten or more articles on the Holy Spirit and the work of the Spirit, by Aaron F. Ballenger.
Ten or more articles on the great Sabbath question, by George E. Fifield.
Each article of these series will be complete in itself as far as reasonable.
In addition to these there will be important articles on all important Christian teaching. The interesting articles on the book of Galatians will continue. Prof. W. W. Prescott will furnish articles, the Lord willing, on the miracles in the Gospel of John. In short, we expect 1899 for THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES to be the very best year of its existence.

It Lies between Socialism and Catholicism.—Says

a Roman Catholic paper: “The result of the elections to the Prussian Diet are now fully known. Both sections of the Conservatives lost eight seats. The National Liberals have lost six, and both sections of the Radical [or Socialistic] party have won fourteen seats. The Centre or Catholic party returns with even greater strength than in the last Diet, having won four seats.” First the ten horns of Socialism appear, then these give their strength and power unto that power represented by the beast, the union of Church and State. Then, in a little while, they will turn against the deceiver to destroy her; and then Christ will come.

The Billion-Dollar Trusts

The fact that about one billion dollars has been heaped together in the United States this year by a few men through the agency of “trusts” should cause alarm. It bodes no good. You should not fail to read the facts set forth upon this subject in our “Outlook” department in this week’s paper.
