LIFE OF WILLIAM MILLER,
WITH PORTRAIT.
This book contains sketches of the Christian experience and public labors of this remarkable man. No other man in this century has been more widely spoken of, and more generally misunderstood. These sketches were prepared by those who were his co-laborers, and are a true presentation of the leading events of his life and labors. In addition to the life and character of the man, the character of the Great Advent Movement, in which he acted so prominent a part, is clearly set forth. It is shown that Mr. Miller was no mere enthusiast, but a man of calm judgment, and his interpretation of the prophecies was mainly correct, his only mistake being in regard to the nature of the event to take place at the close of the 2300 days, in 1844. No one can consider himself well versed in the history of the advent movement in this country who has not read this book.
Contains 408 pp. Price, $1.00.

HARDLY A LOGICAL ARGUMENT.
A writer in the Pacific Christian of July 24 presents the following wonderful statement and proof:—
“The strongest argument used by seventh-day people, and the most delusive, is that the Ten Commandments is the law of God. But let me say, perhaps to the astonishment of the reader, that the Bible never calls the Ten Commandments the law of God. They are not the law of God and never were. Not a text in the Bible referring to the Ten Commandments calls them ‘the law.’ They are always called ‘the covenant,’ or ‘my covenant,’ ‘the covenant that I made,’ etc. Now let me bring the proof.”
And what is the proof which he gives of this strong statement?—Simply this: He proceeds to quote five texts which do not call the Ten Commandments the law of God. It is as tho a man should attempt to prove himself a truthful man by bringing five persons who never heard him tell a lie. In order to prove that the Ten Commandments are not called the law of God every text referring to them would have to be quoted with its connection, and then shown to be in harmony with the above statement. But here are a few points worth considering:—
1. “And the Lord said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there; and I will give thee the tables of stone, and the law and the commandment, which I have written, that thou mayest teach them.” Ex. 24:12, R. V. “And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him . . . two tables of the testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.” Ex. 31:18, R. V. “And the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.” Ex. 32:16. “The law,” then, written by the Lord, was the law of Ten Commandments, and therefore God’s law. And this is confirmed by Deut. 33:2: “From his right hand went a fiery law for them.” Again, when Jehu went into idolatry he “took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel” (2 Kings 10:31), he broke the second commandment of the Decalog.
2. It will be evident to every candid reader that the one law is referred to throughout the epistle to the Romans. In chapter 2:21, 22 the apostle shows that it is the law of Ten Commandments referred to; for he refers to three of them, the second, seventh, and eighth. He intimates that the breaking of this law dishonors God. In verse 18 he shows that this law expresses God’s will, and in verse 20 he declares that in its form the Jews had the truth. The trouble was they knew not its power. In chapter 7:7 the tenth commandment is referred to as convicting Paul of sin, and thus he speaks of the same law in chapter 8:7: “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.”
3. Again, in James 2:8-12 the law of liberty is referred to, (1) as a royal law, the law of the great King; (2) as the law which has the two commands, “Thou shalt not kill,” “Thou shalt not commit adultery;” and (3) it is the law by which all will be judged. As God is the Royal One and the Judge of all, it follows that this law, the Decalog, is the law of God.
We would not mean by the above that “the book of the law,” often called “the law of Moses,” is not the law of God; for it is many times called this. See 2 Chron. 31:3, 4; Luke 2:24. But in the book of the law were written the Ten Commandments. All laws ever given of God are God’s laws, but the morality of them all is in the Decalog.
Be Not Unequally Yoked Together
“Be Not Unequally Yoked Together.”—While we believe that there should be no marriages between the believer and unbeliever, or between those of different beliefs, as set forth in the first article in this issue, yet where such are married, we would not even intimate that they should separate. The same apostle who gives us the instruction at the head of this note also says to the Christian wife or husband not to seek to separate from the unbelieving companion. If he or she wishes to depart because of their unbelief, we should not seek to compel them to remain. “God hath called us to peace. For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?” But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk.” See I Cor. 7:12–17, 27. God is able to change the heart. Labor and pray for the salvation of the unbeliever, not for a change in your position.
Promises to the Willing and Obedient
How many there are who desire to share in the promises of God yet will not submit to obey his precepts! How vain is their hope! God’s promises are to “the willing and the obedient.”
Rest Awhile
Rest Awhile.—Read, ye weary laborers in the vineyard, the article by Sister White, and learn what is true rest and how to obtain it. Take Christ with you, nay, go with him in your seasons of recreation.
Errata
By Editor
Errata.—We regret that three serious errors crept into the article by Brother Kellogg on “Conversion,” in the SIGNS of July 15. In the third paragraph, second line, “restores” should be “bestows.” The quoted word, “consecration” should be “conversation.” Last paragraph, tenth line, “to use,” should be “to us.” A careful reader, however, would, we believe, not make a mistake.
Preach the Word
Preach the Word is the injunction of the Lord to his servants. This includes all else; for Jesus Christ and eternal life are in the Word. Let the Word work. Do not think that man's resolutions, and organizations, and creeds, and legislation, will add one whit to its power or effectiveness. These often hinder by perverting the Gospel, but they never increase its value or power. So, minister of Christ, preach the Word as it is in Jesus Christ. Let it work in and through you, and you may safely leave results with God.
Gratifying—Why?
“Gratifying”—Why?—Our esteemed contemporary, the Pacific Ensign, the W. C. T. U. organ of California, in its issue of July 15 says: “It was gratifying, however, for us to know that California won the Sunday-observance banner, not for having succeeded in obtaining a law which would secure it, in the letter, but for having made the most persistent effort to have the desire for one take root, blossom, and bear fruit, eventually.” But what is there in this for a Christian to rejoice in? Can civil law make Christians, or make men better? Our heart is sad because of the desire for such a banner, for such a law, for such methods used by Christians. We know what the “fruit eventually” will be,—ruin to both Church and State, a ruin worse for those who are the cause than for its innocent victims.
Ministers and Practical Politics
By Editor
The ministers of San Francisco, Oakland, and Alameda, under the influence of Dr. Josiah Strong, have formed an “alliance” to instruct and guide men in practical politics, to educate the honest voter as to how he may circumvent the corrupt politicians. We shall have more to say about it next week. However, we must express the earnest wish of our heart that these ministers would leave politics and preach the Gospel, the power of God. “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life.”
Missionary Friends
We listened with interest the other night to a missionary talk in the S. D. A. Church in Oakland, by Dr. Kate Bushnell, the W. C. T. U. round-the-world missionary, and Mrs. Andrews, a former missionary to China. Their talk was on China, in which Dr. Bushnell spent two years of her life as a medical missionary. Instances were related of the affectionate nature and the steadfastness of character of the Chinese, as well as the dense ignorance of their greatest men. Dr. Bushnell emphasized the importance of medical missionary work, especially a knowledge of midwifery. A woman who dies in childbirth in China is considered eternally lost. But the doctor believed, because the need demanded and God had promised, in the power of the Holy Spirit to heal even as did Jesus. The Word of God was all right, the wrong was with us. An apostate church, with its multitude of false miracles, had blinded our eyes to the true. But the doctor believed that the time would come, and that soon, when the Spirit and power of God would rest upon his people and multitudes would be healed. And so it will be. We are in the time of the “latter rain.” All that is lacking is simple faith in the plain and precious promises of God.
Seeking for Gold.
The world does not call men fools who seek gold, even tho they do not get rich. The vast majority generally return as poor as before the seeking, often worn and weary, broken in spirit and health. Many lose life and reputation and character forever, and some reason. The Christian Advocate tells of the story of a man who discovered gold in digging a trench around his tent, in British Columbia, a hundred miles from Vancouver, just as he had given up a weary search. A week passed and he did not return. His employer went up the coast to look for him, and found him raving mad. The excitement of the find had turned his head, and he had eaten nothing for a week. The only words he could say were: “I have found it! I have found it!” The Lord tells us that when we seek for the wisdom and understanding of God as for “silver” and “hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God;” “then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.” Prov. 2:1-9. Here are treasures more precious, more sure, than gold; and he who finds them will never go mad or insane. These treasures have the promise of the life that now is, and that which is to come.
Senate Rejects Free Bible Tariff Amendment
In the Senate, July 5, when the Tariff Bill was being considered, Mr. Mills, of Texas, offered an amendment to place the Bible in whatever language on the free list. The yeas and nays were called, and the amendment was lost,—21 yeas, 25 nays, 43 not voting.
Spending During the San Francisco Visit
It is estimated that the Christian Endeavors and those who came with them expended the sum of $1,106,000 in the week's visit in San Francisco, or an average of over $27 per capita.
