In His Own Way

THE story is told of a man, long noted for intemperate habits, who was induced by the Rev. John Abbot to sign the pledge “in his own way,” which he did in these words: “I pledge myself to drink no more intoxicating drinks for one year.” Near the end of the year, he again appeared at a temperance meeting, without having once touched a drop.
“Are you not going to sign again?” asked Mr. Abbot.
“Yes,” replied he, “if I can do it in my own way.”
Accordingly he wrote, “I sign this pledge for nine hundred and ninety-nine years; and if I live to that time, I intend to take out a life lease.”
A few days later, he called upon the tavern keeper, who welcomed him back to his old haunt.
“O, landlord,” said he, as in pain, “I have such a lump on my side!”
“That’s because you have stopped drinking,” said the landlord. “You won’t live long if you keep on.”
“Will drink take the lump away?”
“Yes; and if you don’t drink, you’ll soon have a lump on the other side. Come, let’s drink together.” And the liquor dealer poured out two glasses of whisky.
“I guess I won’t drink,” said the former inebriate, “especially if keeping the pledge will bring another lump; for it is not very hard to bear, after all.” And with this he drew the lump — a bag of dollars — from his side pocket, and walked off, leaving the landlord to his reflections. When Does Eternal Life Begin?

JOHN, in writing for our information, said, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life.” I John 5:13. The whole trend of Bible teaching shows that the life imparted by the Spirit of God in the new birth is the life which redemption bestows upon those saved from sin. “We know that we have passed from death unto life,” is the testimony of I John 3:14.
“He that hath the Son hath the life; he that hath not the Son of God hath not the life.” I John 5:12, R. V. John the Baptist testified, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John 3:36.
A new generation must impart a new life, and the life must be in kind like the source whence it proceeds.
With the Christian, the old man of sin has been crucified, and is dead and buried; and in his stead a new man has been born, in whom the Spirit of God presides. This Spirit will reign over him during mortal life, and finally bring him from dust to be endowed with immortal life when the physical glory shall be revealed.
The beloved Paul, writing on this theme of life through Christ, says that as God’s children, we are “heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ.” This testimony gives out what our inheritance is. “As He is, so are we.” Our life is in Him and of Him. When He shall appear in glory, we shall appear with Him. Col. 3:3, 4.
That life in Christ rules our lives now, and our obedience in righteousness is the fruitage of the righteousness that now reigns through Christ in glory. Being led by the Spirit is living by the Spirit. And in the eternal world, we will still be led by the same strong current of life that keeps us in our pilgrimage here. We are in safe hands when we follow this blessed Leader.
WILLIAM COVERT.

His Unrevealed Provisions

It is not what we can see of God’s goodness to us, but what we can not see, that is our richest treasure. Let us learn to praise Him for this, in the spirit of a Christian man who recently praised God for the “provisions that are unrevealed.” And, though still unrevealed, these provisions are already ours in Christ. We are like children not yet of age who have been left a princely legacy that is being held in trust for us, the extent of which we do not know. Yet it belongs to us already. So it is God’s undefeatable purpose to give us possession of all that He has made us heirs of. Part of His unrevealed provision for us will fall due to-day; part to-morrow; part not until our Lord Himself comes again and completes His unrevealed redemption of His own. The normal Christian life is a progressive discovery of the ever-new surprises which God has prepared for them that love Him.—Sunday School Times.

White Slave Traffic in Egypt

ACCORDING to the official report of Lord Kitchener, 843 girls of minor age were met on disembarkation at Alexandria during the year 1913, and handed over to religious authorities or to homes, or to the care of relatives or friends. Of these, 113 were Europeans, 684 Christian or Israelite Ottoman subjects, and forty-six Turkish Moslems. Ninety-five others have been rescued from vice and consigned to the charge of various philanthropic institutions. Seventy-four traffickers were denounced to the authorities during the year, and fifty-two of these were deported—a decided improvement on 1912, when out of eighty-one traffickers denounced, only twenty-one were expelled from the country. More stringent measures are taken against traffickers, and such exemplary punishment is having a great effect on other traffickers. W. C. ISING.

What Is Alcohol?

ALCOHOL is an excrement of the yeast fungus, a parasite which is midway between a plant and an animal. Chemically it is a compound of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, and it is ninety-one per cent by weight ethyl alcohol, and nine per cent by weight water. From its physiological action, we denominate it a narcotic poison. Ethyl alcohol is found nowhere in nature. Wheat may blight in the field, corn rust on the stalk, apples rot on the branch, grapes wither on the vine, but you will find no alcohol. Man's inventive genius brought it into operation. The starch granules are broken by mechanical pressure; and under special conditions of heat and moisture, decomposition is secured. The yeast fungus finds environment favorable for the operation of its physiological functions, and excretes that subtle spirit which is known in the world's market as spirits of wine, beer, brandy, whisky, etc., but which scientifically is called alcohol. — T. Alexander MacNicholl, M. D.

Income Tax

All persons having a net income of over $3,000, and all corporations whatsoever, are required to file returns of their income in the offices of the collectors of internal revenue, on or before March 1, or be subject to additional taxes and penalties in case of failure to do this. Those not fully understanding the demands of this law are urgently advised to inform themselves and to comply with them, at the earliest possible date, in order that through accident or inadvertence, they may not lay themselves liable to the penalties of delay. Inquiries addressed to the local offices of the collectors of internal revenue will receive prompt attention.—Published at request of Collector of Internal Revenue, for First District of California.
